President’s Message from Neil Dempster

While attending the NSA conference in New York, several NSA-Arizona Board Members and Committee Chairs took part in the Chapter Leadership segment. This meeting is held to allow chapters to share best practices, new ideas, and challenges. At the end of the session, I left feeling proud of what our chapter is, does, and continues to be! This pride results from an accumulation of innovative ideas implemented over the years by people committed to providing value to our members. Let’s all be proud of what our chapter represents!

In case you hadn’t noticed, our September 13 monthly meeting is almost here. Based on the number of people who have contacted me to express their excitement, anticipation is building! They are especially excited about the numerous learning opportunities to help speakers grow their businesses. Our chapter has a history of providing unique learning interventions that aren’t available at any other chapter. I hope you are planning to take full advantage of each and every phenomenal component.

Don’t miss September’s second-to-none line-up. With Marsha Petrie Sue as our VOE, Andrea H. Gold, Ted Rogers and Jim Taszarek as our Talent Triage panelists, Joel Weldon as our keynote presenter, and Les Taylor as our Business Building presenter, you will be blown away by how much application-based information you will receive. I look forward to seeing you there!

Sincerely,

Neil Dempster, CSP
NSA-Arizona President 2008-2009

Joel Weldon: Using the Willie Factor – How to Be Amazing in the Eyes of Your Audience

10:45 am – 11:45 am

One of the most highly respected speakers in North America, Joel Weldon, CPAE, has been an idea consultant to leading organizations for over 34 years. Companies that hired him three decades ago still hire him today. Why? Because he gets results!

The timeless truths he presents are unforgettably illustrated by examples that relate specifically to the audience. Skillfully woven through his high content is Joel’s special brand of humor. What a dynamite combination: high content, high energy, and lots of humor!

For NSA-Arizona members, Joel helps you see your speaking career in a whole new light. He’ll discuss how to:

  • Discover “The Willie Factor”—a timeless truth that can take you to the next level.
  • Focus on the little things that produce HUGE results.
  • Connect with audience members in a deeper way than ever.

Joel Weldon is also known worldwide for his unique corporate logo. It’s an 8-ounce can that sits on the desks of thousands of his clients and says “Success Comes in CANS, Not in Cannots.” What a perfect reminder that whether you think you can or you can’t, you’re right!

VOE: Marsha Petrie Sue – How to Give Electrifying Presentations Every Time

9:15 am – 9:45 am

“Be BRILLIANT from the platform.” This advice, given by Glenna Salsbury at the first NSA-Arizona meeting Marsha attended, has helped maximize Marsha’s success. Today, over 90 percent of her speaking business comes through referrals because of her compelling platform presence.

In Marsha’s session, you’ll learn to:

  • Manage hostile people in your audiences
  • Manage Q & A before you close and understand why this is important
  • Stay in control when the audience pushes you off track
  • Get people to buy in to your message wholeheartedly
  • Understand how to stay calm and reduce anxiety every time

In her own presentations, Marsha dares people to take responsibility for their choices, successes, and lives. Think of her presentations as charm school with live ammunition. Whether dealing with employee relationships, increasing productivity, or pumping up sales, Marsha’s guiding principles bring energy to any event. She’ll model her message beautifully at this VOE.

Living Room Forum – September 24 for Coaching/Consulting

Dr. Marcia Reynolds, CSP, will lead us in a discussion of Coaching & Consulting at our first LRF of the year. Marcia, an international speaker and executive coach, is past president of our chapter and the International Coach Federation. Discussion points for the evening include:

  1. Coaching is a way of helping people think in new ways. We use stories in our speeches to change perspective; we can also use coaching techniques. Question: How can you integrate coaching methods into your speeches to make them more powerful and memorable?
  2. There are many definitions of coaching, from the formal definition by the International Coach Federation to the informal explanations that anyone who “coaches” will give you. Question: How would you define coaching and differentiate it from consulting and motivating?
  3. Not everyone is “coachable,” even if they pay lots of money for coaching. Question: How can you determine if your coaching relationship will be successful or if you need to “cut and run”?
  4. What ways can you use coaching to make your programs stronger and more lucrative?

As Zig Ziglar says, “If you help enough other people get what they want, you’ll get what you want.” Come join us in this intimate setting of sharing.

This forum takes place on Wednesday, Sept. 24 from 7 pm to 9 pm in north central Phoenix, hosted by Bonnie Mattick. RSVP at LRF or call Gwen (480) 968-7443. Cost: $15 members, $25 Guests. Registration and payment are required in advance; no refunds. You’ll receive directions when you register.

Note: LRF meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month September through November (third Wednesday) and January through May.

Word Trippers from the Platform

By Barbara McNichol editor@barbaramcnichol.com

Improve how you use words on the platform! Don’t let these pesky pairings trip you up.

Arcane, archaic – “Arcane” refers to knowledge that is secret, mysterious, and known by few. “Archaic” means characteristic of an earlier time, antiquated. “The ability to use a slide rule is an arcane skill; electronic calculators have completely replaced such archaic devices.”

Birth, berth – “Birth” is the act of bearing offspring; the event of being born; the time when something begins; origin; lineage. “Berth” means a shelf-like sleeping space, as on a ship, airplane, or railroad car; sufficient space for a ship to maneuver; a space for a ship to dock or anchor. “The sailor read a letter announcing the birth of his son while lying in his berth in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.”

Bridal, bridle – “Bridal” means of, for, or pertaining to a bride or a wedding. A “bridle” is a harness consisting of a headstall, bit, and reins that restrains and guides a horse; it can also mean to curb or restrain. “The bridal party waited under the wedding canopy when the groom arrived on a white steed with an ornate bridle.”
