President’s Message

The highest reward for a person’s work is not what they get for it, but what they become because of it. — John Ruskin

As I prepared for the year ahead, I wondered, “Why should our members continue to invest their time and money in their professional organization?” NSA-Arizona is thriving while many other organizations are hurting. I believe it’s for these reasons:

  1. NSA-AZ is value driven; you expect great value so that’s where we focus our efforts.
  2. You want excellent programs with an array of topics covering platform mechanics, business development, technology, and marketing—all designed to make you a more effective professional speaker.
  3. As adult learners, you benefit from a variety of offerings:
    • A potpourri of engaging speakers (monthly Saturday program)
    • Experiential with immediate feedback (Speaker Lab)
    • Small group discussion on focused topics (Living Room Forum)
    • Structured curriculum with live and teleseminar events for the emerging professional speaker (Candidate Program)
  4. You want to belong to a credible organization to show that you take your profession seriously.
  5. You enjoy a healthy dose of camaraderie (at no extra charge!).

When I asked, “How can we increase the value you receive?” I thought about my own participation in this and other associations. I realized the value does not only come from the “stuff” I get, but from the energy I put in.

If you’re just showing up one Saturday a month to be fed (literally and figuratively), you’re getting only a taste of what this organization has to offer. By moving your participation from casual, to connected, to committed, you’ll gain access to many local and national resources to help you grow your talent and business.

Further, consider contributing a little of your time and energy so we can continue to provide value to all members. The offerings above (and many other behind-the-scene activities) result from the great work of volunteers who are committed not just to the success of their business, but to the success of the organization that is committed to the success of their business.

At our September meeting, you’ll have an opportunity to volunteer for one of our many NSA-Arizona committees. Sign up and you’ll reap additional value for yourself and for NSA-Arizona.

Sincerely,
Michelle May, M.D. mmay@amihungry.com
NSA-Arizona President

Please Support Our Meeting Sponsor—Dr. Harold Wong, Financial Educator

Two goals that are crucial to the future of Baby Boomers and Seniors: increased retirement income and ways to reduce taxes. Dr. Harold Wong, Arizona Republic financial columnist, will discuss two major concepts that will improve your retirement.

  1. Guaranteed Cash Flow Retirement Accounts
    • Receive Triple CD rates when you retire (annual payout is 11-13% of amount deposited after 10 years)
    • Income is paid for the rest of your life, no matter how long you live
    • Guaranteed against loss of principal by major financial institutions and backed by the State of AZ Guaranty Fund
    • Every year you delay taking distributions, your lifetime income increases by 5-8% a year (modeled after the Social Security formula when one delays taking benefits after age 62)
    • If you die, any principal left is available for your spouse and/or kids
    • You no longer have to be a government employee to qualify for these accounts.
  2. Roth IRA Conversion
    • Convert your current retirement accounts (traditional IRA, 401(k), 403(b)) to a Roth IRA and all earnings are tax-free for life
    • Tax-free means for your life, the life of your spouse, and potentially the life of your kids
    • Double the amount in your IRA so you and your spouse will have extra funds for any emergency (medical, family needs, your “bucket list”)

Note: In 2010, there’s a once-in-lifetime opportunity to do a Roth IRA conversion that has been prohibited for families with combined incomes over $100,000. If you miss 2010, you may never be able to do a Roth IRA conversion.

NSA members receive a free one-hour consultation. Dr. Harold Wong can be reached at (480) 706-0177 or Haroldwong1@yahoo.com. Visit his website at http://www.drharoldwong.com

WORD TRIPPER from the Platform

By Barbara McNichol editor@barbaramcnichol.com

Be precise! Don’t let this pesky pairing trip you up on the platform or the page.

Populous, populace – “Populous” is an adjective meaning full of inhabitants, densely populated. “Populace” is a noun referring to those inhabitants, the general public, especially the common people as opposed to higher classes. “As the city grew more populous but no additional housing was built, the populace grew discontent with the crowded living conditions.”
