President’s Message

Resolutions or Results?

On January 1st, millions of people will resolve to lose weight, get organized, or make more money. Don’t be one of them.

You may be thinking, “What?! But it’s a tradition; I make the same resolutions every year!” Of course you do because they’re not resolutions; they’re results.

Whether you’re setting personal goals for better health or business goals for increasing profit, the key to successful New Year’s resolutions is to create a strategic plan. The following steps will guide you through the goal setting process.

  1. Assess Your Starting Point: Take an accurate and detailed assessment of where you are presently relative to the goal you’d like to achieve.
  2. Consider Your Values: Goals based on your core principles form a passionate attitude.
  3. Dream: Imagine what your life will be like when you achieve your goals.
  4. Define and Clarify: Narrow your goals to those that inspire you the most. Make them so clear that you can see, feel, and measure them.
  5. Write them Down: Write your goals in positive, present terms using detailed words and/or pictures.
  6. Develop a Plan: Set long and short goals, including a timeline with deadlines.
  7. Identify Obstacles: Anticipate setbacks and brainstorm possible solutions.
  8. Create a Support Network: Participate in NSA meetings and conferences, form a mastermind, and identify an accountability partner.
  9. Make it Happen: Periodically assess your progress, adjusting your approach and/or modifying goals as necessary.
  10. Reward Yourself: Small and large incentives will keep you motivated to reach your short and long term goals.

The greatest reward is knowing that you’ve done your best!

Sincerely,
Michelle May, M.D. mmay@amihungry.com

KEYNOTE SPEAKER

Show Me the Funny! with Dale Irvin, CSP, CPAE

Laughter can help you live longer, be healthier, have better relationships, and make more money. Dale Irvin shows us the “funny” in his hysterical presentation and extends the fun into the Extreme Makeover segment.

A comedian, speaker, author, Dale is also the world’s only Professional Summarizer™. How does he do this? Each day during a conference (like NSA’s where he perennially appears), he notices details and summarizes events in a comedy monologue during a general session. In addition to NSA, he does professional summarizing for companies such as Allstate, Duracell, and Mercedes. As one client said, “What Billy Crystal brings to the Academy Awards, Dale brings to our meeting.”

Dale reaches more than 100,000 people a year with his message of laughter therapy. He’s earned the designation of CSP and been inducted in the Speaker Hall of Fame. Among his eight books are Laughter Doesn’t Hurt, Dale Irvin Rewrites History, and Insurance As A Second Language. His humor newsletter, Funny Business, is in its 27th year. In addition to 100+ TV appearances on Showtime, MTV, A&E, HBO, and Oprah, Dale has been in concert with Jay Leno, Paul Anka, The Four Tops, and The Temptations.

BUSINESS BUILDING SESSION

Books: Special Market Sales with Ted Rogers and Vickie Mullins

The Business Building Session starts promptly at 12:15 and ends at 1:30 p.m. All morning attendees are welcome. So your book is done and looks great. You feel great. Then … the big question . . . NOW WHAT? “How am I going to sell these boxes of books? Is there more to life than just back of the room sales and retail establishments?”

Suppose you could secure an order of five or six figures for your book—with cash up front, no returns, and a strong possibility the order will bring in more book orders and even speaking engagements? That’s what special market sales is all about. Corporations, associations, nonprofits, and government entities want high-quality books that can be used for brand loyalty programs, product introduction, and consumer appreciation campaigns.

Presenters Vickie and Ted believe that selling large-quantity book sales is an underused opportunity for speakers/authors. In fact, they think it’s likely easier to sell 10,000 books to one company than to sell 1,000 to retail businesses.

At this session, you’ll discover:

  • Strategies to align and identify potential sponsors
  • How to look outside the box for expanded market possibilities
  • How your publication possesses unlimited value added potential for your sponsor’s brand, products, and customer loyalty
  • Secrets for powerful, effective closing.

Ted Rogers, president of Inspired Living Systems, a training and professional development company, speaks internationally on lifestyle strategies. He’s the creator of “The 10% Factor” success process. Past president of NSA-Arizona, past chair of NSA’s President’s Council, Ted currently serves as chair of NSA’s Membership and Acquisition Committee.

Vickie Mullins is president of Mullins Creative, a full-service graphics and design enterprise specializing in brand recognition for speakers and authors. She has written eight books in her “I Want You To Know Me” series and speaks nationally on family legacy, integrity, and spiritual growth for women.

Members of the program committee are Janita Cooper janita@masterdup.com and Kimberly Amadeo kimberly@worldmoneywatch.com co-chairs; Paula Shoup pshoup@myinteralgps.com, Karen Turner, Kelly Tinberg, and Bill Burton. Thanks to former co-chair Celeste Bumpus who is leaving the Committee.

Living Room Forum—Wednesday, January 27

Topic: What Are Your Prospecting Strategies for 2010? with Alan Rigg

Time: 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Facilitator: Alan Rigg
Host: Janita Cooper, Master Video Disc and Design

Your prospects aren’t sitting around waiting for you to call (or visit). They are busy people with a lot on their minds. When you contact them, you’re a distraction. They want to get rid of you and get back to whatever they were doing as soon as possible.

What can you say to prospects (either in person or in your marketing messages) that will be so compelling, it will cause their brains to screech to a halt and motivate them to pay close attention to YOU?

Sales performance expert Alan Rigg teaches business owners, executives and managers how to build and manage top-performing sales teams. He has helped them refine their sales and marketing messages to increase the effectiveness of both their salespeople’s prospecting efforts and their company’s marketing efforts.

You’ll learn how to develop attention-grabbing prospecting and marketing messages. Alan will also facilitate a discussion about prospecting strategies. As a group we will explore:

  • What strategies have attendees used that have worked?
  • What strategies have attendees used that have NOT worked?
  • What “tweaks” can be made to help failed strategies work and help successful strategies work even better?
  • What additional prospecting strategies might you want to consider adding to your prospecting plan?

A 23-year student of selling and sales management, Alan is the author of How to Beat the 80/20 Rule in Sales Team Performance, How to Beat the 80/20 Rule in Selling and the 80/20 Selling System™ Home Study Course. This NSA-Arizona past president delivers unique insights into sales and sales management via seminars, webinars, and teleconferences.

Cost: $15 members, $25 Guests

Humor Tip of the Month

By Robert Mac Robert@robertmac.com

Practice, practice, practice. Always rehearse a joke or funny story before doing it in front of an audience, trying it out on people with—and some without—a good sense of humor. Get comfortable with the wording and timing so it sounds fluid to a crowd.

Word Tripper From the Platform

By Barbara McNichol editor@barbaramcnichol.com

NEW! Barbara will give away her Word Trippers ebook, a $16.95 value, to the first person who emails her with “NewsFlash Free Ebook” in subject line.

Be precise! Don’t let this pesky pairing trip you up on the platform or the page.

Sallow, shallow – As an adjective “sallow” refers to a sickly yellowish hue or complexion; the verb means to make that sallow color; the noun is a type of willow. As an adjective “shallow” means lacking physical depth, lacking depth of intellect, emotion, or knowledge; taking in a small amount of air in each inhalation. The verb means to make shallow. “To portray a character suffering from consumption, the actress used yellow makeup to make her face appear sallow and she took rapid, shallow breaths.”
