President’s Message

By Michelle May, M.D.

In our ongoing quest to serve our members and keep our website fresh and functional, our chapter’s website has been given a facelift. As small business owners, we all know this stuff doesn’t just happen. Fortunately, NSA-Arizona has a treasure in the expertise of Rich Hamilton who set up our online member directory and has been handling our website since 2003.

Check out the website at www.NSA-Arizona.org to see our new look. You’ll also discover two great new member benefits:

Feature Your Blog on Your Profile: You now have the ability to add a newsfeed to your profile so you can stream your blog content along with your static information.

Featured Member of the Day: This is an automated function that displays the photo and links of a professional member chosen by the computer at random. After all qualified members have been displayed, the computer will start over with a new random sequence. Members who have not loaded the website with profile copy, promo copy, and photo will be skipped. So don’t get left out. Instructions for updating your profile are at: edit-your-profile

Rich will soon offer similar member directory software to associations, chambers, churches, schools, alumni associations, civic groups, and special interest groups via www.RunYourOwnWebsite.com. Way to go Rich! (He also gives his recommendations for online and tech resources at RichsList.com.)

Thank you to all of our members who, like Rich, provide value and excellence to our chapter!

Sincerely,
Michelle May, M.D. mmay@amihungry.com
NSA-Arizona President

You are about to experience the wisdom of two past national presidents, two CSPs, two CPAEs, two Cavett recipients, and two best friends. As two of the most legendary, remarkable speakers in all of NSA, they will share the essence of speaking with passion power, and purpose.

In this heartfelt session, you will discover how to: - Identify your passion. - Determine your power base. - Apply practical wisdom for telling great stories. - Deliver transformational presentations with a clear sense of purpose.

In addition to their talk, they’ll bring powerful, life-changing materials that they’ll be delighted to autograph. Both provide individual coaching on the art of living congruently and speaking successfully. Naomi and Glenna have each been speaking professionally for 42 years; that’s 84 years of heart and soul . . . and they are still upright and sane!

Prepaid registration (by 5 pm Wed., April 7): $30/members, $45/guests At-the-door registration: $40/members, $55/guests. VOICE OF EXPERIENCE

“I Love House Boating on Lake Powell”—Everyone Has a Story to Tell with Joe Weldon

What do you tell your audiences when you speak? Do you tell them a story? Is it a personal story or about someone you know or about a stranger you’ve met? Almost everyone has a story to tell. But most people don’t know how to tell that story as effectively as it could be told!

In this fast-paced, idea-filled session, you’ll learn how to make your stories better in a whole new way. You’ll apply Joel’s NFV formula that has made his presentations unique for decades. And by attending this session, you might even end up going to Lake Powell! (Must be a story there!)

Joel is a charter member of NSA, a CPAE Speaker Hall of Fame member, a Golden Gavel winner, a Legend of the Speaking Profession, and a Lake Powell house boater!

EXTREME SPEAKER MAKEOVER

Video Marketing with Janita Cooper and Maggie Hunts

Do you know the difference between a good video and a great video? Are you too close to your material to judge how it will be received by meeting planners? Do you make excuses for not having a demo you can send electronically? Are you losing opportunities to speak due to a poor quality demonstration of what you do?

If your answer to any of these questions is “yes,” be sure to see this Extreme Speaker Makeover with NSA member Maggie Hunts and Janita Cooper, Master Video Disc and Design, CEO.

You’ll learn how Maggie went from “What do I do?” to “Wow, this is what I’ve been missing!” As Maggie once asked, “Janita, what do you mean the sound shouldn’t squeak when I hit the high notes?” Janita shows how she gave Maggie a zillion product ideas and a super demo video. Bring your power pen to capture all the ideas that roll out of Janita’s mouth.

Janita’s Master Video Disc and Design has been a valued audio/video production resource for corporate clients like NSA (VOE Monthly CD production and replicating), Thunderbird School of International Marketing, Banner Health, City of Phoenix, and Arbonne International. She works with NSA speakers including Larry Winget, Keith Harrell, Les Brown, Pamela Jett, Beth Terry, Neil Dempster, Marsha Petrie Sue, and more.

Maggie is the author of It’s a Sweet Life Now, A Guide To Living Well & Happy With Diabetes. As a speaker and entertainer, she opened for Mary Tyler Moore when Mary received her Woman of the Year Award. Maggie herself has won an award in international sales training for Intel Corporation and was named best upcoming sales person for AT&T and best stand-up comedy in L.A.

Special thanks to Marilyn Snyder, The PowerPoint Lady, for creating our ESM opening!

BUSINESS BUILDING SESSION

Putting the ‘PRO’ into Professional: Technology MUST-KNOWs to Impress Meeting Planners and Delight Audiences with Neil Dempster

Have you noticed? The technical knowledge required for speaking professionals today has escalated dramatically!

If you . . .

  • innocently think you can just show up and someone else will handle your AV needs
  • break into a sweat at the thought of embedding audio or video into PowerPoint
  • don’t know an XLR connection from a DI box
  • have watched others botch their presentations because of a technology blunder and said, “I never want that to happen to me!” . . . then you need to know how to put PRO into professional when it comes to presentations.

Neil Dempster, CSP, MBA, our chapter’s immediate past-president, has spent the last decade learning from his own technology mistakes—and from hundreds he’s witnessed from other speakers. He shares his knowledge in this fast-paced, content-rich, humorous presentation about AV do’s and don’ts. You will leave with a list of NECESSARY items and at least a dozen tips that will keep you out of trouble when you face unforgiving audiences who expect a professional speaker to be, well, a PRO!

Facilitator: Gwen Henson

Join us on Wednesday, April 28, when Gwen Henson, executive director of the Arizona Book Publishing Association, will lead a discussion on “Publishing for Speakers.” Speakers are in a unique position to publish their books successfully, but how do you get started? Gwen invites those who have publishing experience and those whose goal is to publish their first book in the coming year.

  1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of self-publishing vs. finding a traditional publisher?
  2. How can you find trustworthy editors, designers and printers?
  3. Why is publishing a book an important goal for speakers?

HUMOR TIP OF THE MONTH – Know Your Audience

By Robert Mac Robert@robertmac.com

Keep your references appropriate to your audience. If they’re in their 20s, talk about Beyonce; if they’re from the ’20s, try Ella Fitzgerald.

WORD TRIPPER FROM THE PLATFORM

By Barbara McNichol editor@barbaramcnichol.com NEW! Barbara will give away her Word Trippers ebook, a $16.95 value, to the first person who emails her with “NewsFlash Free Ebook” in subject line.

Be precise! Don’t let this pesky pairing trip you up on the platform or the page.

Take, bring – Is the item you’re talking about coming or going? If it is coming to a place, then someone “brings” it; if it’s going somewhere, then someone “takes” it. “Will you bring me a glass of water, please?” “Yes I will, after I take the dirty glasses away.”

Sign up for Barbara’s Word Tripper of the Week at www.BarbaraMcNichol.com. Barbara is your perennial NewsFlash editor.
