President’s Message—Thorns and Roses

By Michelle May, M.D.

I’m on the last leg of an eight-day, three-city, 14-presentation trip. When people ask what the speaking business is like, I say great—if you don’t allow the inconveniences to become a thorn in your side or forget to smell the roses!

Thorns

  • Airport bathrooms with toilet sensors that cause the toilet to flush while you’re still sitting on them.
  • Electronic room keys that don’t work—twice in the same stay.
  • A two-hour limo ride each way to and from the airport because we didn’t ask the right questions. (Note to self: Atlantic City is closer to Philadelphia than Newark.)
  • Looking like an Avatar because the meeting planner saved $50 bucks by ordering a lavaliere mic with a cord instead of wireless.
  • Changing time zones five times in eight days.

Roses

  • Eight flights with no delays. (Maybe I should buy a lottery ticket!)
  • Bumped to first class on every leg with a first class cabin.
  • Technology that allows me to conduct two webinars and a teleseminar from my hotel room.
  • Speaking engagements in Hilton Head with an afternoon off for a walk on the beach and a massage.
  • The excited squeal from the audience when the emcee announced that the sponsor purchased a copy of my book for everyone in the room!
  • A text from my daughter – “I passed my driving permit test!” (I know…more thorns are on the way.)
  • Changing lives and making money doing what I’d do for free.
  • Tonight, sleeping in my own bed.

Sincerely,

Michelle May, M.D. mmay@amihungry.com
NSA-Arizona President

VOICE OF EXPERIENCE

Build a Seven-Figure Business with Just One Industry with Dave Richardson

Almost all professional speakers have held a “real” job in some industry. During that time, they developed a depth of understanding that makes them an expert in their field. Dave Richardson, CSP, demonstrates how far that industry expertise can go!

It’s not necessary to be all things to all people. Rather, he exemplifies how to become a celebrity in a niche industry. He’ll share how that recognition can significantly affect product sales as well as the number of speeches, seminars, workshops you will do.

An NSA member for 28 years, Dave has built his business around one industry, the jewelry trade. He’s presented at jewelry conventions in every state in the U.S. and every English-speaking country in the world, including several where his message was translated. He has written more than 750 trade journal articles and produced CD training albums as well as manuals, books, videos, and customized learning systems. His popular book Memorable Ways to Pop the Question has made him the jewelry guru of the bridal engagement niche.

EXTREME SPEAKER MAKEOVER

Creating a New Graphic Identity with Vickie Mullins and Gloria Petersen

Change never changes. Life happens, creating experiences that become the opportunities to stretch and grow. As 2008 wrapped up, Gloria Petersen was looking ahead when she won a silent auction bid to have Mullins Creative design a new one-sheet for her.

But life happened! It was more than 14 months before she stepped forward to get her one-sheet designed, yet her passion, her focus, even her message had changed. It was up to Vickie Mullins and her team at Mullins Creative to embrace the “new” Gloria with a new graphic identity that would give her colorful look.

Come see Gloria’s “before” and “after”—and learn graphic principles that could make over your business identity, too.

Vickie Mullins is president and founder of Mullins Creative, a full-service graphic design company that specializes in print communications. Her 20-vision for this company has remained consistent: To treat its clients like family, to do more than expected, and to give away more smiles than business cards.

Gloria Petersen founded Global Protocol, Inc. in 1985. Since then, her clients have achieved personal and professional growth from Gloria’s seminars and training modules on professional presence, business etiquette, and international protocol. Her accomplishments include directing and hosting “Image of Success,” a FOX network television show, and serving as an etiquette judge on The Learning Channel.

Special thanks to Marilyn Snyder, The PowerPoint Lady, for creating our ESM opening!

BUSINESS BUILDING SESSION

Escaping the Entrepreneurial Money Traps with Karen Russo

How can you stay out of Scarcity, Superstition, and Survival Mode—and enjoy Real Financial Power?

Too many smart, visionary, talented speakers are blocked—unnecessarily—by subtle anxieties, resentments, and overwhelm in areas of their lives.

An ordained minister, former corporate trainer, and award winning salesperson, Karen Russo, MBA, studies the spirituality, beliefs, and habits of conscious wealth creators. In this session, she shares principles and tools they use to achieve results, both spiritual and financial. You’ll learn to develop the creativity, confidence, and clarity to lead your own wealth vision and succeed in today’s rebuilding economy.

Think of Karen as Your Spiritual Guide in Wealth Creation. She shows how to identify (and escape from) the 3 Money Traps, including tactics to help you stop struggling, complaining, or worrying (even the slightest bit).

Apply universal principles around money for yourself, your family, your clients, your business, and the world! Let Karen be your guide. The author of The Money Keys: Unlocking Peace, Freedom and Real Financial Power, Karen has been featured on TV’s Good Morning Arizona, Fox News, Sonoran Living, radio’s Dr. Pat Show, and WABC TV New York and in The Arizona Republic and Phoenix Woman.

Members of the program committee are Janita Cooper janita@masterdup.com, Kimberly Amadeo kimberly@worldmoneywatch.com, Paula Shoup pshoup@myinteralgps.com, Kelly Tinberg.

HUMOR TIP OF THE MONTH

Choose Your Words Carefully. Duh!

By Robert Mac Robert@robertmac.com

Your language can have a great effect on what your audience sees in their minds. Santa is always “jolly” but never “morbidly obese” for a reason. Those words are the fine brush strokes that paint your picture.

WORD TRIPPER FROM THE PLATFORM

By Barbara McNichol editor@barbaramcnichol.com

Be precise! Don’t let this pesky pairing trip you up on the platform or the page.

Connote, denote – “Connote” means to suggest or imply meanings or ideas in addition to the literal meaning; to have as a related or attendant condition. “Denote” means to be a name or designation for; to mark or indicate. “The phrase ‘amber waves of grain’ is more often used to connote America’s abundance than denote an actual field of wheat.”
