President’s Message
By Michelle May, M.D.
I can give a weeklong seminar on mindful eating without notes but opening our monthly NSA-Arizona meeting in front of my peers has been, well, a little intimidating. As speakers, we can’t help but silently observe, learn from, and yes, even critique our colleagues.
I hope you’ve learned as much from our other speakers as I have this year. From marketing, to humor, to product development, their wisdom, talent, and willingness to share it with us deserves our respect and gratitude. From “backstage,” I’ve also seen that with seven to ten speakers, four segments, and multiple transitions, the programmatic details and technical aspects of NSA-Arizona meetings are almost as important.
Our Programs team has worked diligently, investing countless hours to pull off each event. They set increasingly high standards and strive to exceed them. As just one example, Neil Dempster has taken on the huge tasks of bringing our audio-visual equipment up to par and coordinating the AV needs for most of our programs. Though technical difficulties go with the territory, he has created a new NSA-Arizona AV Checklist for each of our speakers next year to minimize unexpected surprises.
As professional speakers, it is our responsibility to be sure that the AV elements of our presentations are as tight as our stories. Please download a copy of the AV Checklist for your personal use and show your meeting planners that professional speakers do it best!
I hope to see all of you at the NSA Convention in Orlando in July!
Sincerely,
Michelle May, M.D. mmay@amihungry.com
NSA-Arizona President
2009-2010
P.S. Please let our amazing 2009-10 Program Committee members know you appreciate their hours of hard work: Janita Cooper, Celeste Bumpus, Kimberly Amadeo, Paula Shoup, Neil Dempster, and Greg Nosek, our “AV guy.”

KEYNOTE SPEAKER
The Facts and Fantasies of Book Publishing with Michael LeBoeuf
It’s hardly a secret: One of the best ways to build speaker credibility is to have a book or books published by major publishers. With eight books and more than 30 years of publishing experience to his credit, Michael LeBoeuf knows what it takes to build a successful writing career. In this candid and irreverent presentation, he shares what he’s learned about choosing a marketable book topic, writing a winning book proposal, choosing a good title, working with agents, and working with publishers—the joys and frustrations.
Michael’s books have been published in more than a dozen languages, sold almost 2 million copies, and been adapted to 17 audio and video programs. He began his career as a business school professor teaching Management. The success of his writing and speaking career allowed him to retire from teaching at age 47 in 1989. His books include Working Smart, Imagineering, The Greatest Management Principle in the World, How to Win Customers and Keep Them for Life, and The Millionaire in You. He’s been interviewed on hundreds of radio and television shows including The CBS Evening News, Good Morning America, and Oprah.
Michael moved to Arizona in 1996, proclaiming to be an unemployed prince, a title he holds today. He lives in Paradise Valley with his wonderful wife, Elke, and 11 cats.

EXTREME SPEAKER MAKEOVER
Organizing for Speakers with Kathy Marcil and Eileen Roth
With all of Kathy Marcil’s expertise, the one issue she couldn’t master was organizing herself for personal and professional success. Then she met Eileen Roth who worked her magic on Kathy’s self-diagnosed “disorganized personality disorder.” Eileen worked her magic to resolve Kathy’s organization problem.
This session reveals how Eileen helped Kathy transform her office so she could be more productive and save time. More important, Kathy could stop diagnosing herself and get through this roadblock to success.
Kathy has been a licensed counselor, life purpose coach, and a nationally certified intervention specialist for over 30 years. She’s seen more than 10,000 clients and conducted about 1,000 interventions. Addressing issues that affect people in their professional and personal settings, she speaks on surviving life’s unexpected moments and helps them write personal mission and vision statements.
Eileen is the author of Organizing for Dummies and Your Tour Guide for Success. She helps people travel on the four paths of L.I.F.E.: Location, Information, Focus, and Experiences. Eileen has appeared on the Today Show and Oprah, and her work has been featured in ASTD’s Training and Development, Successful Meetings, Convention Forum, Event Solutions, Self, Real Simple, Reader’s Digest, Women’s Day and twice in Men’s Health.
Special thanks to Marilyn Snyder, The PowerPoint Lady, for creating our ESM opening!

Living Room Forum—Upcoming for Next Fall and Winter
When my great-grandfather had the honor of managing the legendary Budapest opera house in Hungary, stories about him and his wife hosting illustrious salons weekly at their home have come to me. They invited luminaries from the worlds of art, music, writing, and philosophy. I can imagine the laughter, the gusto, and the clinking of crystal.
With this heritage in my heart, I am honored to step into the role of Chair of NSA-Arizona’s Living Room Forum for 2010-2011. I look forward to presenting our own luminaries to discuss topics for today’s professional speaker. These events will be held on the fourth Wednesday evening of each month at the homes of various members. Stay tuned for specific program information in September. Discover an intimate setting for learning, discourse, and new friends!

HUMOR TIP OF THE MONTH – Show, Don’t Tell
By Robert Mac Robert@robertmac.com
Engage your audience’s imagination by describing interesting details (showing) instead of just giving facts (telling). The more engaged they are, the more effective your humor will be.
WORD TRIPPER FROM THE PLATFORM
By Barbara McNichol editor@barbaramcnichol.com
Be precise! Don’t let this pesky pairing trip you up on the platform or the page.
Convince, persuade – You “convince” someone of an idea but “persuade” someone to take action. Therefore, it’s correct to say, “He convinced me it would taste good” but incorrect to say, “He convinced me to taste it.” Instead, say, “He persuaded me to taste it.”
