NSA-Arizona President’s Message from Joan Koerber-Walker
What Does Your Presentation Say About You?
When our clients engage us for our services, they buy a package. The marketing materials, products they view, and reputation they learn are the promise of the solution we will deliver for the price they will pay. Our message – and how it meets their needs – is the gift we bring to the engagement. Our demeanor – and the way we respond to them throughout the booking and engagement process – is the packaging that makes our gift more attractive. Ah, but the quality of the presentation is the ribbon that ties it all together.
This month, Marilyn Snyder joins us to help create the bow that helps differentiate your gift from all the rest. I hope you will join us.
Consider the complete gift you bring to your clients. Does it meet your need to give, or is it more? Is it the gift – the message – they hope to receive? Taking the time to determine the needs of your clients is the true mark of a professional. Taking time to understand what they are asking for AND what they require will bring you what you need: rave reviews, repeat and referral business.
Right now, ask yourself –
- What will make the person who books me successful in reaching their goals?
- What do audience members need to reach and exceed theirs?
- How can I present it in a way that they remember it long after I have gone?
The answers to these questions will help you deliver the gift your clients truly want. And it will come back to you over and over again.

Avoid the “Death by PowerPoint” Syndrome—Marilyn Snyder
Audience members grumble about mind-numbing PowerPoint slides read word by word by presenters. Speakers begrudge excessive show-preparation time. Sadly, you may be killing your audiences with bad slide design and dying on stage because of poor delivery.
To prevent “Death by PowerPoint,” learn professional secrets to giving life-restoring PowerPoint presentations. In Marilyn’s session, you will learn:
- Three elements that spell success for every PowerPoint presentation.
- Seven shortcuts that guarantee you’ll spend less time prepping your slideshow, leaving more time to communicate with your audience members.
- Professional design techniques that turn meaningless bullet points into memorable content so you can engage your audience’s hearts and minds.
- Five little-known delivery techniques that ensure your presentation sends the right message.
- Two formulas guaranteed to make your presentations memorable.
Marilyn Snyder specializes in creating and delivering customized PowerPoint design and presentation skills seminars. She is a long-time member of NSA and ASTD (American Society for Training and Development) and author of Creative Animations for PowerPoint, Volumes 1 and 2 and High-Performance Speaking.

VOE: Patricia Drain and Debbie Allen–Learn how to travel less and make more with another stream of speaking income
Debbie Allen and Patricia Drain were both seeking another stream of income that would keep them off the road traveling so much with a hectic speaking schedule. They discovered that the seminar business is one of the top 10 most profitable businesses ….so they decided to take their existing event business to a much higher level. Their goal was to create a wealthy stream of income for themselves and for others.
Debbie and Patricia co-created Maximizing Success, Inc. in January 2005 and hosted their first event with 550 attendees from six countries around the world. They now plan two major events a year in Arizona, one in Phoenix and one in Sedona. They will share with you their story, the ups and downs of owning an event business and how they created systems to keep the business growing fast.
Dave Sherman and Stephanie Angelo head the Program Committee 2006-2007.
Candidate Program: Light at the End of the Tunnel
Starts promptly at 12:15 p.m. – all morning attendees welcome.

NSA’s San Diego Convention Goes “Seriously Nuclear”
Professional speakers don’t go to the NSA Convention to hear old thinking or feed their sacred cows. They go to get roughed up and laugh at themselves. To have their thinking challenged. And to be taken to places where few minds, hearts, and spirits have ever gone before.
If we’re going to be instruments of transformation in this world, we first need to experience it ourselves. It’s not an option, it’s a requirement. It’s what you do to play the game.
Every year, Convention creators have expanded our understanding of the world we want to influence. This year, they’ve gone seriously nuclear. Why? Because irrelevancy is not a place we want to go as a profession.
Book your room at Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego – space is limited! NSA has reserved a limited block of rooms at a special rate of $144 single/double occupancy. This rate will be extended through Friday, June 15, 2007 as long as rooms are available in the NSA block. Mention “National Speakers Association” to receive this rate.

NSA-Arizona Speaker Development Lab –
Daytime Labs: April 10 and 24
“I found the NSA Speaker Lab feedback extremely useful,” says NSA member Dr. Pat Gangi. “I also appreciated the written feedback because I was able to go through and identify trends. I’m delighted that participants feel free to gently disagree with each other on their perceptions of what goes well and doesn’t go well in the presentations. For example, one person commented on how natural my gestures looked, but another felt that I had kept one of my arms unnaturally still at my side. That small bit of feedback was important, because I had been deliberately trying to keep my arms closer to my sides (recommended by someone outside of NSA). Now I can see that I really need to trust my natural sense of movement and ‘go with the flow’.”
Thanks to Pat and other participants, we get that kind of feedback regularly. As suggested by Don Thoren, we’re starting later in the morning—enough time to avert the rush hour traffic. We now meet at 9:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month at NSA Headquarters.
At $75 per year (easily paid at the NSA-Arizona website http://nsa-arizona.org/?p=46), it’s a bargain. Please join us.
Upcoming speakers:
April 10: Sel Fillerup, Bonnie Mattick and Ted Rogers
April 24: Silver Rose, Mary Switzer, and Maggie Hunts
Thanks to Celeste Bumpus who has taken over the coordinator duties from April through June. She can be reached at celeste@celestebumpus.com. For questions and scheduling, contact Celeste. Thanks to Jackie Dishner at jackiedishner@msn.com for being Jan-Mar coordinator.
NEW Evening Lab: April 17
Silver Rose is pleased to announce a location for the Evening Speakers’ Lab, thanks to Dave Sherman. It will be held at Sherman Training Center, 4600 E. Shea Blvd, Suite 202, Phoenix, AZ 85028 (nearest cross street is Tatum) 6.6 miles from AZ-51.
This is a great opportunity if you can’t attend in the daytime. It will be held the 3rd Tuesday of each month beginning April 17th at 6:15 (mingling time) and 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. To sign up for a slot on the April 17 agenda, contact Silver at Silver@SilverSpeaks.com and use the following subject line: NSA Evening Lab - Slot, Please.

Info Products: Tips to “Bottle and Sell” What You Know
Extend your reach beyond your presentation with these tips from Kendall SummerHawk.
Every time you sell an information product, you’re creating an opportunity to build a lucrative client relationship. The key is following up instead of flaking out!
Here’s what I mean: Every time you ship a book or product, be sure to include a welcome letter and information about other products and/or services you offer. Next, send out a special letter two weeks after an initial purchase, using this follow-up letter to “check in” with your clients. Ask if they’ve read one of the tips you’ve included and give them the page number. Stuff your envelope with information about your upcoming workshop, teleseminar event, or new program.
These follow-up letters are inexpensive to send, yet make a strong impression. I recommend planning a campaign that includes 4 to 7 letters. Make each one personal and offer a tip, reminder, or other information your clients will value. Watch as they pay increasingly more attention to your offers!
Kendall SummerHawk shows entrepreneurs how they can brand, package, and price their services to create more money, time, and freedom in their business. To sign up for FREE tips like these, visit her site at http://www.kendallsummerhawk.com
