NSA-Arizona President’s Message from Beth Terry
One of the most important things we do is celebrate our successes. At the halfway mark, that’s a great time to do it! The next time you see our board members or committee chairs, shake their hands and thank them for doing a great job. Here’s the evidence.
In August, we held an NSA-Arizona Board Retreat and devised these goals:
- create a strategic plan for each committee
- develop and execute a plan for sponsors for our meetings
- increase our membership by a minimum of 2 members per meeting
- provide exciting, varied programs based on survey results from last year
- support our webmaster in updating the website and making it more accessible
- take care of our fiduciary duties regarding corporation and liability insurance
- become more involved with meeting planners and speakers bureaus
- get involved in the community, providing not only expertise to people who need us, but also offer opportunities for higher visibility
- continue to provide a meaningful, interesting newsletter
- maintain or improve our financial standing support and the ways we provide programs for our membership: Teleseminars, Living Room Forum, Tuesday Lab, Chapter Meetings, Holiday Party and Fiesta, Candidate Program, taping service
- invest our funds to increase our yield
- increase our visibility in the community with PR and more
- marketing our meetings and programs, as well as member news
The good news? We are six months into the year and we’ve achieved all but the last two on the list. Those goals are in process as we speak!
If you come to meetings but don’t realize what goes on in the background, we invite you to get involved. Not only can you enrich your chapter and profession, you’ll find excitement and enrichment for yourself and your career.
Please acknowledge these people when you see them. It takes a lot of people to make your Saturday mornings easy and fun, and to provide all we do!

Everything You’ve Ever Wanted to Ask a Speakers Bureau but Never Knew Who To Ask!
There’s such a mystery in our business about speaker’s bureaus. How do you get them to book you? What are they looking for? How do I get them to look at your demo video? When should you start working with a bureau?
On Saturday, February 11, 2006, your bureau questions will be answered by our panel of distinguished experts:
Andrea Gold – Gold Stars Speakers Bureau http://www.goldstars.com
Bobette Gordon – New Information Presentations http://www.newinformation.com
Heidi Hougham-Ream – Phoenix Speakers Bureau http://www.phoenixspeakersbureau.com
Andrea Gold is president and co-owner of Gold Stars Speakers Bureau, a Tucson-based, full-service bureau that offers the services and expertise of 500+ speakers, trainers, facilitators, consultants, celebrities and sports figures to corporations, associations and government agencies for their special events.
Bobette Gorden’s company New Information Presentations represents more than 1,000 professionals, celebrities, authors, sports-stars, and experts. She has served on the International Board of Directors of Meeting Professionals International (MPI) and is formerly president of the Arizona Sunbelt MPI chapter. In 2000, she was awarded the 2000 MPI International Award of Supplier of the Year from over 18,000 members worldwide.
Heidi H. Ream is president and founder of Phoenix Speakers Bureau, a full-service bureau that has provided nationally recognized speakers, trainers, and consultants to business and industry since 1984. In 1994, Heidi started Phoenix Conference Planners, which offers complete meeting services. She recently completed writing Let’s Do Lunch! A Life Course in Owning Your Own Business with Wally “Famous” Amos. Heidi served on the Board of Directors for the Make-A-Wish Foundation from l984-l991 and YWCA of Maricopa County 1997-2004. She currently serves on the Board for the Arizona Animal Welfare League.

Speaker/Speech Development Lab
Larry Colbert, president of the NSA-Arizona Speaker Development Lab, says, “Join the 2006 Lab Experience and gain value from other people’s experience until you’re ready to present for yourself! On February 14, it will be held from 8:45 – 11:00 a.m. at NSA headquarters. A February 28 evening meeting will be held at the Arizona Small Business Association classroom, 4130 E. Van Buren Suite 150, starting at 6:30 p.m.
Moving from a $750 speaker to a $5,000 speaker is not easy but this Lab helps those who have that goal by taking speakers at their current level of quality and helping them move to the next level. It’s a safe place to experiment and learn as presenters test new material or ask for help on their existing material.
Attending the Lab costs only $75 a year (which is $3 and change for each meeting) or you can pay by the meeting. New Idea: Participants can show 5 to 10 minutes from a CD or video tape and get the same quality feedback and enrichment suggestions.

Website content attracts meeting planners
If you haven’t visited the association website recently at www.nsa-arizona.org, check it out. Our webmaster Rich Hamilton, in cooperation with committee chair Joe Hammer, has provided an attractive and useful site that contains more great information than ever before.
On the first page, you’ll find a link to “A Special Message for Meeting Planners.” If you have a great article or tip that could suitably be included here, let us know. We plan to continue to build the value of this site, making it a magnet for both meeting planners and members.
If you would like to contribute to the website, email Joe Hammer our Website Committee Chair joe@joehammer.com.

Word Trippers from the Platform
Barbara McNichol helps you find the exact word for your presentation or written piece.
Loath, loathe – “Loath” is an adjective that means unwilling; “loathe” is a verb that means abhor or hate. “I felt loath to admit the accident was my fault because I loathe feeling I lost control.”
Lose, loose – The verb “lose” is the opposite of the verb “win.” “Do you win or lose when you gamble?” The adjective “loose” means not fastened tightly while the verb “loose” means to free something. “This loose blouse looks comfortable.” “Loose (or loosen) your tie and relax!”
Manner, manor – “Manner” is the way in which a thing is done or happens. “Manor” means the district over which a lord had domain in medieval times. “I learned the right manner of using a battering ram at Lord Byron’s manor this fortnight.”
