January 2012 News Flash

President’s Message

Welcome to 2012!

Whether we like it or not, another year has passed and a new year is straight ahead. Most people plan to change some things, especially the way we’re doing business. Even if you had a great year in 2011, continuous improvement marks a true professional.

One of the great management thinkers of all time, Peter Drucker, said this: “The only way to get the future you want is to create it.” One of our honored NSA members, Randy Pennington, reminds us the one thing outstanding organizations and high performing individuals have in common is actively managing their futures. The key word is “actively.”

This time next year, you’ll be in one of two situations either you’ll be (1) scratching your head wondering what happened or (2) patting yourself on the back for what you made happen. If the second one appeals to you, answer these “looking-ahead” questions to help you create the kind of year you want to have:

  • What successes are you looking for next year?
  • How can you make better decisions in 2012?
  • What do you need to learn or relearn in 2012?
  • Which piece of unfinished business needs your attention?
  • What project needs to be completed in 2012?
  • What risk(s) do you need to take in 2012?
  • Who do you want to positively impact in 2012? Name three people.
  • What important relationship needs to be improved next year?
  • What one word best sums up the experience you want to have in 2012?

Have a wonderful 2012!

Sincerely,

Les Taylor les@lestaylor.net
NSA-Arizona President
2011-2012

Paid to Speak comes to life in Arizona

The book Paid to Speak is a rich resource of information for speakers. To kick off the new year, NSA-Arizona brings the book to life with insightful tips you need to turn 2012 into your most successful year as a professional speaker.

“Best Practices for Your Speaking Business in 2012″

What does 2012 hold for you, your business, and our industry? Look ahead through the eyes of prominent NSA-Arizona leaders. We’ll enjoy three “Paid to Speak” presentations and a follow-up panel discussion moderated by NSA-Arizona President Les Taylor.

You’ll come away with in-depth ideas of how you can plan your year based on the “voices of experience” from this distinguished panel. They’ll address how to sell your services in the changing markets, what trends to watch out for, how product development and sales fit into your business, and much more. NSA’s book, Paid to Speak, forms the basis for discussion topics.

HUMOR TIP OF THE MONTH – Is Your First Appearance Your Worst Appearance?

By Robert Mac Robert@robertmac.com

How you take the stage allows you to speak without speaking, so do it deliberately. If you pounce, stride, or scurry on the stage, you’re making a non-verbal statement about who you are.

Editor’s Note: This is Robert’s last tip for NSA-Arizona NewsFlash. He is moving to Washington, DC. Thanks, Robert!

MARKETING YOURSELF ONLINE

By Rich Hamilton rich@richhamilton.com

Start the New Year by reevaluating your WordPress website. (If your website doesn’t use WordPress, change that!) Are your WordPress software, plugins, and theme up-to-date? Does your website need a facelift? Are you getting the traffic you should? Are your goals being met? Have you set realistic and worthwhile goals? If not, it’s time to rethink and relaunch an improved website.

WORD TRIPPER FROM THE PLATFORM

By Barbara McNichol editor@barbaramcnichol.com

Weary, wary – “Weary” means to be physically or mentally tired due to hard work, exertion, strain; it also means to be impatient or dissatisfied with something (e.g., weary of excuses). “Wary” is being watchful or on guard against danger. “Even if you become weary while driving, being wary of the traffic around you is your first priority.”
