NSA-Arizona President’s Message from Ted Rogers
As we welcome our New Year, many of us relate with the Roman God Janus, finding ourselves peering forward and back at this time of year. I hope that your 2004 was successful, challenging, and fulfilling–and that you’re looking forward with great anticipation, expectation, and hope for 2005.
I recently learned that a friend is struggling with a serious illness. This energetic and dynamic force has lived his life to the fullest. He has experienced great success, enjoys his wonderful family, “has it all” . . . and knows it. He shows that through his humility and gratitude.
When we spoke together at an association event, we really enjoyed working together. Our presentation focused on these three key ideas:
- How do we decide what is really important to us?
- Why does our obsession with the small risks of life take up so much of our time, focus, and effort?
- What are the real risks that award us success and fulfillment?
< ?OL>
My friend knew the “three” answers to these questions for himself; he visited both the questions and answers frequently. Ironically, most of us pass through life not really answering (or wanting to answer) them.
Yes, sometimes we simply feel overwhelmed with all the expectations and demands on us. How do we break down the major components (risks) of our lives into bite-sized pieces that we can handle? Where do we find the inspiration to tackle and achieve the most important tasks that will bring us fulfillment and success? Most importantly, how do these answers translate into intentions for our businesses and our lives in 2005?
Guillaume Apollinaire wrote this wonderful poem that reminds us where we can find answers:
Come to the edge, he said.
They said, We are afraid.
Come to the edge, he said.
They came…
and he pushed them…
and they flew!
This year, may we all come “to the edge.” Wishing you success, challenges and fulfillment in 2005!
Ted Rogers
President, NSA-Arizona

Candidates meeting 12:15 p.m.
President’s Note: Your board of directors has updated NSA-Arizona’s bylaws (sent to you via email Dec. 15), to be offered for ratification at the January 15 meeting. **Successful Speakers Secrets REVEALED! **
One of the best ways to learn about the speaking business is to find successful speakers, arrange a time to get together with them, buy them a cup of coffee, and ask them every question you might have. Unfortunately, due to your busy schedule and their INSANELY busy schedules, it might take 6 to12 months to set up a meeting.
Well, don’t despair my friends, because NSA-Arizona has come to your rescue. On January 15, you’ll have the opportunity to get together with four incredible speakers at once. And we’ll even buy the coffee.
Join us for a panel discussion with the following speakers:
- Glenna Salsbury, CSP, will answer your questions about topic development.
- Stephanie Frank will answer your questions about website sales and marketing.
- Debbie Allen will answer your questions about shameless self-promotion.
- Jim Hennig, CSP, will answer your questions about negotiating for your highest fees.
Glenna and Jim are past NSA presidents and Debbie is a past NSA-Arizona president.
So these panel members can provide us with on-target information, please send your questions before the meeting to Dave Sherman at dave@connectionpros.com. Make sure to identify which panelist your question is addressed to.
Note: To allow additional time for this special format, there will be no Voice of Experience at the January meeting.

Word Trippers from the Platform
Want to find the exact word for your presentation or written piece? Barbara McNichol’s Word Trippers can help!
Sardonic, sarcastic –While both refer to bitter, cutting, or derisive expression, “sardonic” goes beyond content to describe the manner of expression. “His sarcastic comment was delivered with a sardonic smile.”
Semi, bi –”Bi” occurs every two intervals; “semi” occurs twice during a time period. “I publish a bi-monthly newsletter, sent every other month, rather than a semi-monthly, which goes out twice a month.”
Small, less, fewer — When size is involved, use “small”; when importance is involved, use “less”; when quantity is involved, use “few” or “fewer.” If you can count the number of items, use “fewer.” “The small dog picked the less painful of two options. He faced fewer problems by running away than by attacking the porcupine.”

Website Wisdom Tips from Kendall Summerhawk
Tip: Lead off your home page with a snappy question or a bold statement. The best questions address the symptoms your choice client is experiencing, yet still get a “yes” answer. Example: for a professional organizer, a good headline might be: “Does the ‘O’ in organize stand for overwhelm?”
