NSA-Arizona President’s Message from Beth Terry

A new year. New goals. New intentions. Or just another day on the calendar?

Why do we go into a tizzy over the end of the twelfth month and not at the end of the second month? Happy March Eve – Woo hoo!

It’s because we need rituals, traditions, excuses to celebrate and mark time. Humans are goal-seeking organisms. And it is good once in a while to feel we can put a year behind us and start fresh. We know we can; most of us have been alive long enough to know that old adage “today is the first day of the rest of your life.”

So what are you going to do with this new time?

As speakers, we have a special charge: We walk in other people’s heads. So it’s a good idea to make sure ours are screwed on straight—although I do believe that the best speakers have often been the ones who’ve walked the toughest roads.

How about this: Take a few minutes to walk in gratitude for the last year. Think about how you will use your wonderful skills and talents in the new year. Create visions for the future, but don’t tie yourself down too tightly, for plans have a way of changing as time and events unfold. Do promise to take better care of yourself. Learn two new things this year. And laugh. Humor is great medicine. Finally, take what you do seriously, but don’t take yourself too seriously. As Annie Lamotte is fond of saying, “In a hundred years, all new people!”

Here’s an interesting thought for the new day, new month, new year from Hugh Prather’s book Notes to Myself.

“There is a part of me that wants to write, a part that wants to theorize, a part that wants to sculpt, a part that wants to teach . . . to force myself into a single role, to decide to be just one thing in life, would kill off large parts of me.

“My career will form behind me. All I can do is take the step before me now, and not fear repeating an effort or making a new one.”

All the best to you this new year.
Beth Terry, NSA-Arizona President 2005-2006

Bullseye! Think Smart with Thom Winninger, CSP, CPAE
BULLSEYE! How Market Leaders Consistently Hit the Mark

Just hitting the target is not good enough for companies in these economic times. They have to hit the BULLSEYE. False starts, misguided actions, or incorrect assumptions can be enough to destroy an opportunity, alienate a client, or miss an entire market.

Thom demonstrates how market leaders incorporate Bullseye Focus to think smart, create priceable value, and build cultures of difference. His high-energy presentations overflow with business examples and strategies that have people saying AH HA, the BULLSEYE!

Thom is the founder of Winninger Visionscope, a Minneapolis-based think tank. He is author of the best-selling books MarketQuake, Price Wars, Full Price, and Sell Easy. His soon-to-be-published book The One Thing shares what leadership companies are doing to be distinctively different.

Thom’s market strategies have been featured on CNBC, First Business, Boardroom Reports, Venture, and Success Magazine. Frequently referred to as America’s Leading Market Strategist, he is reinventing the way companies create differentiation.

Thom is a winner of the Cavett Award, the highest recognition given by the National Speakers Association.

Speaker/Speech Development Lab

Larry Colbert, president of the NSA-Arizona Speaker Development Lab, says, “Join the 2006 Lab Experience and gain value from other people’s experience until you’re ready to present for yourself!

Moving from a $750 speaker to a $5,000 speaker is not easy but this Lab helps those who have that goal by taking speakers at their current level of quality and helping them move to the next level. Says Don Thoren, “Our Lab is a safe place to experiment and learn, not a forum for feeding your ego. People test new material or ask for help to improve existing material. We give them valuable feedback while protecting their self esteem and belief in their own potential.”

Attending the Lab costs only $75 a year (which is $3 and change for each meeting) or you can pay by the meeting. The January 10 meeting will be at NSA Headquarters from 9:00 a.m. to 11 a.m. The first evening meeting will be held on January 24th from 6:30 to 8:45 PM at ASBA (Arizona Small Business Association) on 4130 E. Van Buren Suite 150 (a red three-story building on the north side).

New Idea: Participants can show 5 to 10 minutes from a CD or video tape and get the same quality feedback and enrichment suggestions.

Website content attracts meeting planners

If you haven’t visited the association website recently at www.nsa-arizona.org, check it out. Our webmaster Rich Hamilton, in cooperation with committee chair Joe Hammer, has provided an attractive and useful site that contains more great information than ever before.

On the first page, you’ll find a link to “A Special Message for Meeting Planners.” We would like to credit the author of this useful section. Can you tell us who it is?

In addition, if you have a great article or tip that could suitably be included here, let us know. We plan to continue to build the value of this site, making it a magnet for both meeting planners and members.

If you know the mystery author or would like to contribute to the website, email Joe Hammer our Website Committee Chair joe@joehammer.com.

Word Trippers from the Platform

Barbara McNichol helps you find the exact word for your presentation or written piece.

Mischievous, mischievious – “Mischievous” means causing mischief, or being playful in a teasing way. “Mischievious” is not a word but rather a wrong pronunciation of mischievous. “The mischievous father enjoyed instigating spats among family members at Sunday dinner.”

Momento, memento – While “momento” is not a word, it’s commonly misused in place of “memento”—a reminder of the past, a keepsake. To avoid tripping up, remember the word “memory”; the first vowel is “e” (not “o” as in “moment”). “Buy a memento of San Francisco so you’ll remember your trip.”

Moral, morale – “Moral” means a lesson while “morale” refers to an emotional state. “The moral of the story encourages team members to keep their morale high.”

Word Trippers are featured in The Door Opener, an ezine that helps you open doors to your dreams through the written word. Subscribe at http://www.barbaramcnichol.com or send an email to editor@barbaramcnichol.com

Worth Repeating (written by Patience Strong)
A new road before us—a new road to take,
A new dream to dream, and a new life to make.
A new star to follow—a new faith to hold,
A new world to build, on the dust of the old.

A New Year is here with a message for all,
A message of Hope, though the shadows may fall.
The skies will be brighter, the clouds will roll by
Somewhere out there where the road meets the sky.

HAPPY NEW YEAR
