Congratulations!

To Kathleen Tomes for making the grade as a professional member of NSA.
To Jeffrie Story for winning our Chapter Member of the Year Award!

NSA-Arizona President’s Message from Ted Rogers

I can’t believe that a year of “Enjoying Your Journey” has almost come to an end. I remember when all chapter presidents were sworn in at last year’s NSA National Convention. Time has gone by so quickly.

I look back on this year with amazement and awe. And gratitude. I want to thank NSA-Arizona’s board of directors for a great year—all that they created. Each and every one of this leadership team has made a difference for the viability of our chapter: Beth Terry, Jeffrie Story, Joan Koerber-Walker, Pamela Jett Aal, Dave Sherman, Bob Kelly, Steve Allen, Debbie Christofferson, June Cline, Neil Dempster, and John Hersey, our immediate past president.

A special thanks to our wonderful executive director, Gwen Henson, who does so much to create a smooth-running, professional association.

To our webmaster Rich Hamilton for his expertise in building and maintaining our impressive online resource for our members and the meetings industry.

To Barbara McNichol who has diligently created our newsletter to keep us informed. A special acknowledgement for the new Business Builders Bulletin, a valuable resource to help us grow our businesses.

To Deb Gardner who stepped in to help with the membership committee. Her enthusiasm and fresh ideas have ensured great service to our members and growth of our chapter!

To Bill Johnson, CSP, who has offered ideas and insight to our chapter. Bill was NSA’s first executive director and has been a great resource and friend forever.

To Don Thoren, CPAE, who enthusiastically promoted and led the Speakers Development Lab this year.

And to our “chapter sages” for 2004-2005, Jim and Naomi Rhode, who have brought our Board of Director’s great wisdom along this journey and their continued commitment to our chapter! They offer us wisdom not only because they’ve both been past national presidents of NSA and long-time board members, but from their experience running a highly successful, multi-million dollar business. Nothing short of brilliant, their insights and inspiration have provided encouragement for your leadership team. Thank you all for all you do for our chapter!

In looking back through this journey of achievement this year, I’d like to revisit with you some of the lasting thoughts experienced this year. Please scroll to the end of this newsletter for inspirational ideas that stood out for me this year.

Thanks for the privilege of allowing me to serve as your president.

Ted Rogers, President
NSA-Arizona

June’s (and Steve’s) Humor Tips
Steve Tyra and June Cline, CSP

Many of us get quite confused about how we should present ourselves. Unsure about the image, we project, we don’t know if we’re correct in our current fashion styles. But despite what you may see on the streets, the following combinations DO NOT go together and should be avoided:

  1. A nose ring and bifocals
  2. Spiked hair and bald spots
  3. A pierced tongue and dentures
  4. Miniskirts and support hose
  5. Ankle bracelets and corn pads
  6. Speedos and cellulite
  7. A bare midriff, a belly button ring, and a gall bladder surgery scar
  8. Unbuttoned disco shirts and a heart monitor
  9. Midriff shirts and a midriff bulge
  10. Bikinis and liver spots
  11. Short shorts and varicose veins
  12. Inline skates and a walker
  13. Thongs and Depends

Word Trippers from the Platform

Barbara McNichol helps you find the exact word for your presentation or written piece. Note: Barbara co-presented at the May Candidates Meeting about how to write a client-capturing website.

Passed, past – “Passed” is a form of the verb “pass” meaning to go by. “I pass the mailbox on my way to work every day. Yesterday, I passed it more times than usual.” “Past” is an adjective, noun, preposition, or adverb that shows something has gone by. Adj.: “We celebrate past glories.” Noun: “We enjoy thinking about the past.” Preposition: “It’s the house just past the corner.” Adverb: “The troops marched past.”

Peak, pique, peek – “Peak” refers to the top of something (e.g., a mountain, chart); “pique” is to attract someone’s interest; “peek” means to take a quick look at something. “I want to pique your interest in climbing to the peak of that mountain so we can peek at the valley on the other side.”

Pedal, peddle – The verb “pedal” refers to riding a bicycle while “peddle” means selling wares. “The salesman peddles new products every week as he pedals his bike through the neighborhood.”

Website Wisdom

Keep in mind the “little things” from Webmaster Kendall SummerHawk that can make your site better. Note: Kendall co-presented at the May Candidates Meeting about how to write a client-capturing website.

Tip: Speakers tend to be high-energy people who want their website to reflect their verve and spirit. But many speakers’ websites overuse exclamation points in a misguided attempt to create energy and excitement. Using too many exclamation points says “Amateur” instead of “Motivating.” It’s much more sophisticated to create energy through bold writing, juicy phrasing, and inspiring metaphors—not punctuation.

Inspired Thoughts from 2004-2005 at NSA-Arizona
In September, we were reminded of this wonderful poem by Marianne Williamson called “Our Deepest Fear”!

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves ‘Who am I, to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous?’
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a Child of God.
Your playing small does not serve the World.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking,
so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.
We were born to make manifest the Glory of God, that is within us.
And as we let our own light shine,
we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear,
our presence automatically liberates others.

And the real question is this: Are you living full tilt and without fear—not in the sense of overwhelm but of richness and greatness?!

In December, we talked not so much about finding “our” perfect Christmas tree but about celebrating family, the moments we spend together, the magic within our relationships, those important individuals who feed and nourish our souls!

In October, we noticed the lesson that when we get better, everything gets better! How we owe it to ourselves—and our audiences—to take that workshop, read that book, learn and grow, become our best selves we can. What an important gift to yourself… and the world!

In January, we asked, Are we still obsessed with the small risks of life? The little, insignificant ones that take up so much of our time, focus, and effort? When will we move on to tackle the real risks that award us success and fulfillment? Can we find the courage to “come to the edge” to experience the exhilaration of success and living our dreams. We’re challenged by Guillaume Apollinaire in his poem “Come To The Edge”:

Come to the edge, he said.
They said, We are afraid.
Come to the edge, he said.
They came…
and he pushed them…
and they flew.

In February, we asked, Are we working on “SMART Goals” with persistent action? Do we stretch who you are and thrive? When we work everyday at our dreams, with goals, persistence and with the help of others, like your NSA family, there is very little that you won’t achieve and succeed at.

Also in February, we addressed Thomas Edison’s challenge: “be a brilliant success… or a brilliant failure”… whatever you do, dream and do big! How those words can power us, our lives and careers for destinations and dreams rarely thought of. Do you hold these words true for our businesses and for ourselves?

In November, we reviewed the “Dozen-Do’s” that were shared by past NSA president Mark Sanborn:

  1. Bite off more than you can chew. This year, this month, this moment is an opportunity for growth and exploration.
  2. Be available. Be accessible.
  3. Always tell the truth, but do so without being brutal or angry.
  4. Solve what you can and accept the fact that we can’t solve it all. Give up worrying about it. It’s not your job to make everyone happy.
  5. Pay attention to both faces of the NSA brand… what we perceive is NSA and our chapter… and what outsiders think.
  6. Don’t hold back… try. Even when we make mistakes… we learn.
  7. Focus on your strengths. History books are full of individuals who knew their strengths and used the talents they were given.
  8. Always, stand-up for what you believe and share it when appropriate.
  9. Do things with class and kindness.
  10. Share the good news that surrounds us. Nurture the grapevine with stories of success, hope and perseverance.
  11. Focus!
  12. Love is what matters most. Make a commitment to treat people properly. Love what you do; love whom you do it with; and love who you do it for.

In April, we asked, Have we incorporated the simple and powerful idea of the “Factor of 10 Percent”?™ How could a 10 percent improvement in your business or personal life impact you? Simply achieved by consistent, focused, efforts. Day in, day out. Let’s play our own game just a little bit better each and everyday. When we do, success and greatness is waiting for us. And it lies within each of us!

And in May, we were reminded to simply remember the blessings, to allow ourselves to believe and see blessings all around us. What a wonderful privilege we have when we share and empower our audiences to this miracle.

In March, we asked, How do we respond when things don’t go great for us, when we get knocked down and bruised? Do we continue to believe in our own brilliance? I also resolved to “DRINK THE GOOD CHAMPAGNE” and want you to join me in that.

I raise my glass to you all for the wonderful journey and the enormous blessings shared!

Ted Rogers, President
