NSA-Arizona President’s Message from Beth Terry
Members–Thank you for your support this year. It has been an honor to serve you. And thank you for all the efforts so many of you put into making this a great year!
We have had a tremendous year with record-breaking attendance, increase in membership, increase in financial strength, and increase in volunteerism. Thank you to everyone who attended, pitched in, made our guests feel welcome, and generally showed Arizona we are a wonderful group of people, indeed.
Our Board met last August and set our goals. The success of this year was planted then. We have fully accomplished all of our goals except for the last one–increased visibility in the community. I would say we are half way there with the sponsorship program and our increase in membership. But we can and will do better on that goal next year.
Here is your State of the Chapter Report as of June, 2006: Our Mission Statement: NSA-Arizona exists to help professional speakers connect to the resources needed to increase the value of their businesses.
Currently we have:
100 Professional Members–13% increase
75 Candidate Members–33% increase
We have more than a full year’s operating capital in the bank and are in the process of moving the major portion of that into a low-risk investment with higher yield than the current money market account. We just had a financial review that indicated we were doing very well.
Our bylaws were updated this year. Our website was updated this year. Our financial audit was completed this year. Grade: A+ Our Candidate Program continued to flourish and showed increased attendance
We have 14 people on our Board, all of whom were attached to some committee and responsible for reporting each month.
Our goals for 2005-2006:
- To increase membership by at least 2 members each month–ACCOMPLISHED
- To increase volunteerism by asking each committee chair to have at least 1 person on their committees–ACCOMPLISHED
- To enhance and strengthen our fiscal position–ACCOMPLISHED
- To provide more expanded resources to our membership using not only an enhanced website, but also by creating a sponsorship program that partners with others in our industry, strengthens our financial position, and brings resources to us.–ACCOMPLISHED
- To provide informative, interesting, powerful programs at our regular meetings.–ACCOMPLISHED
- To find ways to enhance membership by supporting Living Room Forums, The Lab, the Candidate Program presentations, the Newsletter, creating better online resources and updating the website.–ACCOMPLISHED
- To improve our visibility in the community.–HALFWAY THERE
When you see board members or committee chairs at our June meeting, please thank them for their dedication and hard work on your behalf. Appreciation fuels motivation.
Please join us on June 10 as we honor those who have served NSA-Arizona in 2005-2006. And don’t miss the wonderful media panel who be here to answer all your FAQs about PR and the media! A hui hou,
Beth Terry

Members of NSA who are “Aviators” (student pilots, pilots, skydivers, parachutists, astronauts) and “Speaking Eagles” (former pilots, speakers on aviation, speakers to mainly aviation groups, airline or former employees) are invited to e-mail their interest in joining an informal meeting at the NSA 2006 Orlando National Convention, July 22-25, 2006. We are planning to have an interesting speaker, the first deaf instrument-rated pilot who has been an NSA member. Please email Howard Putnam at: Howarddp@aol.com if you want to be part of this informal group.
NSA-Arizona Speaker Development Lab
Moving from a $750 speaker to a $5,000 speaker is not easy, but this Lab helps those who have that goal move to the next level. The “Lab” is experimenting with one morning meeting and one evening meeting each month. The 2nd Tuesday will be held at NSA headquarters at 8:45 to 11:00; the 4th Tuesday meeting at the Arizona Small Business Association classroom 4130 E. Van Buren Suite 150 at 6:30 p.m. Don Thoren asks, “The ASBA facility is great, but quite costly. Does anyone know of a place we could meet in the evening for approx. $50 per meeting?”
“As a first time attendee, I must say the speakers lab is just plain great. To have a group of your peers watching with a keen speaker’s eye is worth its weight in gold. Like any audience, the group is comprised of a wide sampling of human beings—all with their own perspective, opinions and speaking experience. Even when they disagreed, I learned so much about how to improve my presentation.” –Dawn M. Lake, M.A
Attending the Lab costs only $75 a year (or you can pay by the meeting. Participants can show 5 to 10 minutes from a CD or video tape and get the same quality feedback and enrichment suggestions. Contact Don Thoren, CPAE, at dthoren@cox.net or Eileen Roth at EileenRoth@aol.com

Word Trippers from the Platform
Use the exact word for your writing and your speech, from Barbara McNichol.
Hardy, hearty – “Hardy” describes being bold, sturdy, courageous, or capable of enduring hardship. “Hearty” means warm-hearted, genuine, sincere. “The hardy athletes received hearty congratulations after winning the grueling game.” It can also mean forceful (a hearty push), substantial (a hearty meal), vigorous (a hearty workout).
Healthful, wholesome – “Healthful” implies a positive contribution to a healthy condition (get involved in healthful exercise) while “wholesome” applies to something that benefits you, builds you up, or sustains you. Louisa May Alcott wrote: “Work is wholesome…It keeps us from ennui and mischief.” Work, however, is not always healthful!
Hope, hopefully – “Hopefully” means full of hope: “Will you help? she asked hopefully.” It’s incorrect to use “hopefully” when you want to express hope for something. Instead of saying, “Hopefully, he’ll help me,” say, “I hope he’ll help me.”
