NSA-Arizona President’s Message from Joan Koerber-Walker

Our March meeting will be extra special as we are joined by NSA President (and former NSA-Arizona president) Lenora Billings-Harris. Her visit got me thinking about the importance of leadership and the many forms it can take…team leadership, project leadership, and of course, thought leadership.

Ask yourself, “Am I a LEADER? Do I even want to be?” We talk about leadership in the boardroom; we look for it in our elected officials; we integrate it into the classroom from elementary school to university. When I was in school, we focused on learning how to manage. Today we focus on learning to lead. Has the focus shifted too much? Contrary to so many things we read today, management and leadership are not mutually exclusive skill sets.

We need to both manage AND lead depending on the circumstances. When we’re making sure an event comes off smoothly, a plan is executed cleanly, or important things at home or at work are dealt with, we need to manage. When we’re motivating people, changing directions, or exploring new areas with our family, friends, or audiences, we have the opportunity to lead. Note that we have an opportunity–not necessarily an obligation–to take the lead.

To manage or to lead? That is the question.

Two of my favorite writers on management and leadership are Warren Bennis and Ken Blanchard. Both have created models that draw distinctions between managing processes and leading people. The following table combines their ideas and mine and provides a short list of the styles and behaviors we use when we either manage or lead.

Managers Leaders
Are Systems Focused Are People Focused
Direct Activities Encourage People to get on board
Control Assets Create or find resources
Risk averse Risk tolerant
Administrative by nature Innovative by nature
Focus on How and When Focus on What and Why
Emphasis on doing things right Emphasis on doing the right thing
Goal/Plan Oriented Visionary
Monitor near term results Look to the far horizon

As you look at the differences between the two, it’s clear that great leaders are important for future direction but it’s the team and the managers that get the work done. It’s like Oreo® cookies and milk–both are good individually, but together they are even better.

Your chapter provides many opportunities to showcase your skills as both a manager and a leader. Take the opportunity to get involved on committees, serve on the board, or be part of organizing our wonderful events. When I first joined NSA in 2002, that was the first thing that I did. It has brought me great friends, solid business connections, and wonderful opportunities. It can for you too!

Discover Your Inclusivity Quotient™: 17 Ways to Enhance Your Soul & Substance on the Platform

Join National NSA President Lenora Billings-Harris, CSP, for this fun, interactive and non-judgmental session to enhance your Inclusivity Quotient™ so your soul and substance can be fully received by everyone in your audience.

NSAers used to ask, “Do I have to use humor?” The answer was, “Only if you want to get paid.” The same answer applies to the question, “Do I have to understand my group’s differences?” Corporations and professional associations are investing millions of dollars to make their organizations more inclusive. They assume consultants and speakers already have the same sensitivities they do. During this highly interactive session you will discover how to honor and include your audience across ethnicity, gender, sexuality, age, religion, and different abilities while maintaining your own authenticity. She will help you uncover habits that unintentionally offend, and develop behaviors that help you have an impact on today’s audiences and be invited back.

By participating in this session, you’ll be able to:
1. Enhance your own multicultural competencies as a speaker.
2. Identify the training and presentation techniques that help learners feel respected and included.
3. Explore the most common multicultural barriers in the learning environment.
4. Explore ways to evaluate your current programs to identify possible oversights, and then utilize techniques and resources to address them.

Lenora Billings-Harris, CSP, is an author, consultant, and professional speaker. She serves on the adjunct faculty of the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. In addition to being NSA president, she serves our NSA Foundation Board of Trustees as chair of the Art Berg Grant.

“As professional speakers we help pave the road to hope and a better world. Let’s be sure to include all of our audience members on the journey.” –Lenora Billings-Harris, CSP

We are giving away all audio tapes so come to the March meeting and see what we have. Also if you have old CDs, DVDs, or videos you want to donate, add them to the collection at the meeting.

Sue Shipman has done a stellar job getting our Library organized. Thank you, Sue! Debra Exner from the Candidate program has stepped up to take over the Library for next year. Thank you Debra! NSA-Arizona Speaker Development Lab – March 13, 27

“I continue to be awed by the creative talents offered by the NSA members in the Lab… Thank you for your input and inspiration.” That’s a testimonial from NSA candidate Bonnie Mattick, who knows the meaning of value. For $75 a year, lab participants can receive great feedback that can boost their bottom-line results. You also learn from other NSA-sponsored workshops and events. For example, Silver Rose recently shared what she learned on “Crafting a Killer Keynote” NSA University, Marco Island.

Recently, Don Thoren, CPAE, (who helped mold the lab experience into what it is today), presented how to most effectively use the feedback from the lab as you become consciously aware of both strengths and weaknesses. “Be willing to hear what’s said, be able to sift through both the good and the bad, and let go of whatever doesn’t work for you. Then you gotta be willing to do it all over again.”

If you have a speech that’s half written, if you want to test a new opening or ending, or if you just want be around friends, come to the NSA Speech Development Lab. We meet from 8:45 a.m. to 11 a.m., on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month at NSA Headquarters.

For questions and scheduling, contact Jackie Dishner at jackiedishner@msn.com. If you’re interested in evening meetings, contact Silver Rose at Silver@SilverSpeaks.com.

Info Products: Tips to “Bottle and Sell” What You Know

Extend your reach beyond your presentation with these tips from Kendall SummerHawk.

If you have an information product, there are at least 5 ways (in addition to out-right sales) you can use it to make more money. You can include your product as part of a consulting or coaching package, give it away as a early-registration bonus (this one is my favorite), bundle it with your speaking services, bundle it with someone else’s training program, or include it with someone else’s product.

The goal is to leverage your information product in as many ways as possible. For example, I include my “How to Charge What You’re Worth and Get It!” 4-CD and workbook set as a special bonus in my Brand Authenticity Master Mind membership coaching club. Each of these members loves receiving such a valuable gift and I benefit from creating more word-of-mouth buzz, which I’ve tracked to increased sales. Selling your product online or BOR is great, but when you include these additional “get it out there” methods, you’ll create momentum and more sales!

Kendall SummerHawk shows entrepreneurs how they can brand, package, and price their services to create more money, time, and freedom in their business. To sign up for FREE tips like these, visit her site at http://www.kendallsummerhawk.com

Word Trippers from the Platform

Don’t let these Word Trippers from Barbara McNichol trip you up.

Except, accept – “Except” means leaving something or someone out while “accept” means agreeing to something. “Except for Tom, I can accept all the other candidates on the slate.”

Exaggerate, exacerbate – To “exaggerate” is to make overstatements or to increase to an abnormal degree. To “exacerbate” is to aggravate an already severe, violent, or bitter situation. “If you exaggerate, people may stop believing you.” “Drought and high winds exacerbate the wildfire in the mountains.”

Expedient, expeditious – The adjective “expedient” refers to something that’s done for short-term gain suiting one’s self-interest; the noun “expedient/expediency” means action used to meet an urgent need. “Expeditious” means acting promptly with speed and efficiency. “In today’s political climate, radio stations find it expedient to play patriotic songs.” “Urgent situations require expeditious handling of supplies.”
