President’s Message from Joan Koerber-Walker

The 3 Ps of Decision-making: Promises—Plans—Priorities

This month, you get a preview of next year as president-elect Alan Rigg will be stepping up and running the meeting in May. While Alan is with you, I will be traveling to the East Coast to attend my niece’s wedding. Making the choice to miss one of our last meetings together as President of NSA-Arizona got me thinking about the choices we all must make. It comes down to 3 Ps: Promises—Plans—Priorities.

Promises
As I have shared with you over the last few months, our promise is the root of our brand. How we keep our promises reflects on how our brand is reflected in the perception of those around us. Our promise is also our commitment to do what we say and be what we promise. Authenticity plays a big role in our business. Be careful what you promise; your audience and your customers will expect to receive it.

Plans
To keep our promises to ourselves and to others, we need a plan. Even with the best of intentions, keeping promises is hard work. We need to lay out a plan to address our needs, those of our audience, the solutions that have the greatest possibility for success, and the timeline in which we can make things happen. And because things don’t always go as we plan, we have to add a dash of flexibility—to adjust, bend, and balance the different priorities that are tied to the promises we’ve made.

Priorities
As my husband Chris recently shared with me, each time we say “Yes” to something, we say “No” to something else. In our businesses—and our lives—let’s always keep in mind the priorities that drive us and stay as true to them as we can.

Have you assigned priorities to the promises you make and the action plans you have adopted? No matter how well we plan, conflicts always arise. When I joined the Board of Directors at NSA-Arizona five years ago, I actively planned my business around the time commitments that come with the honor of serving on the board. The second Saturday of the month was sacred on my schedule; I chose engagements or declined them based on when they fell in the month. (I also had the luxury of being a business speaker who rarely speaks on weekends so I didn’t have to choose too often.) I had a plan to meet my commitment to NSA-Arizona.

But as they say—“the best laid plans…” Earlier this year, my niece Shannon called to say that she and her fiancé Sean had set the date for their wedding on May 11th. They chose this special day because it was the day Shannon’s parents had married 25 years before. Since Rick and Robin had eloped, I missed that wedding, and I was away at college when Shannon was born. Now I had the opportunity to celebrate with my family on this special day, yet I faced a conflict of promises—attending would keep me away from our gathering at NSA-Arizona.

My priorities were clear. Family first meant choosing to travel to the East Coast and the wedding—but I also knew that I could make that choice with confidence because NSA-Arizona has a well-defined succession plan. As I mentioned, our president-elect is willing and able to step up. The NSA-Arizona promise would be kept.

So this month, think about YOUR 3Ps. Your Promises—Your Plans—and Your Priorities. How do they fit together and what do they mean to your life and your business? When you have them well aligned, the right choices are easy to make.

See you in June.

Self-Sponsor Public Seminars to Make Money and Get Business—Linda Gabbert Keith, CPA, CSP

Open-enrollment programs can be risky—you can lose your shirt. Or you can make money while increasing credibility and bringing in leads for speaking, training, coaching, consulting, and product sales.

Are public seminars right for you? This session with Linda Gabbert Keith helps you make an informed decision and create your plan for launching and managing open-enrollment offerings. In this 90-minute session, you will learn:

  • How to determine if your message and market is RIGHT for public seminars
  • How you can use public seminars to build your business
  • How to be successful when you do it

Linda Gabbert Keith, CPA, CSP, helps lenders make good loans and make more of them at banks and CUs throughout the country. She self-sponsors 3 seminar series a year—3 days per city in 5 cities on the West Coast—and has for over 15 years. These are small sessions with 15 - 30 attendees. Her public programs add credibility, market her services to her preferred geographic market, dramatically increase her client list, and allow her to control her calendar. Oh, and yes, they make money most of the time. Find out how!

VOE: Words are “Loaded Pistols” (Sartre) – Handle with Care! – Bob Kelly

In 28 years as an author, editor, ghostwriter, and editorial consultant, Bob Kelly has seen it all—the good, the not so good, and the ghastly. Laugh and learn as he shows you how to look your best on paper and shares with you how to avoid the most common mistakes writers make.

Dave Sherman and Stephanie Angelo head the Program Committee 2006-2007.

Candidate Program: Inside the Public Seminar—Susan Ratliff

Starts promptly at 12:15 p.m.—all morning attendees welcome.

Susan Ratliff, of Expert Exhibits, shares insights on how to make public seminars work effectively. The title of her talk alone entices you to attend: “Inside the Public Seminar: How to Put on a Successful Event Without Losing Your Hair, Your Mind, or Your Friends.”

CONGRATULATIONS! to our newest graduate, Jessica Pettitt, who has recently qualified as a Professional Member of NSA. She reached her goal of making it from Candidate to PM in less than a year. Jessica’s go-get-’em spirit has also helped to launch Tucson’s speaker network and has landed her a listing on Campuspeak’s roster. Great work, Jess!

Beth Terry and Elizabeth Harper co-chair the Candidate Program 2006-2007.

NSA-Arizona Speaker Development Lab

Upcoming Daytime Labs – May 8, May 22, June 12

“Routine attendance at the NSA Speakers Lab has increased my awareness of the structure of a presentation and the importance of connecting to an audience. Personal feedback from others helped me solve problems I had been wrestling with for months.”
- Selvoy M. Fillerup, MD, MSPH, FACS

“I received several good comments about the way I can incorporate the parody into my presentation. The comments ranged from ‘high energy level’ to ‘why are you using this?’ I learned I needed to give the group a better set up prior to showing the parody. Just getting to show it to the group and gain opinions were important.”
- Bonnie Mattick

At a cost of $75 per year (easily paid at the NSA-Arizona website http://www.nsa-arizona.org), attending this Lab is a true bargain. Please attend the Tuesday morning Speakers Lab, now at a new time: 9:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.

Info Products: Tips to “Bottle and Sell” What You Know

Extend your reach beyond your presentation with these tips from Kendall SummerHawk.

Want to know where the REAL money is with selling information products? Well, it’s not in selling one or two CD sets at the back of the room to people as they straggle out the door. The real money can be found in creating a “continuity program.” That’s when your clients pay a monthly subscription fee to receive any combination of coaching, live or recorded teleseminars, expert interview CDs, or even an information rich newsletter.

Sure, continuity programs take a bit of preparation and planning to set up, but the payback is well worth it!

Kendall SummerHawk shows entrepreneurs how they can brand, package, and price their services to create more money, time, and freedom in their business. To sign up for FREE tips like these, visit her site at http://www.kendallsummerhawk.com

Word Trippers from the Platform

Don’t let these common Word Trippers from Barbara McNichol trip you up.

Awhile, a while – The dictionary says “awhile” means “for a while” (for a period of time). Therefore, it’s redundant to say “for awhile” because it’s like saying “for for a while.” “Let’s get together awhile. We can drink and enjoy visiting for a while.”

Bad, badly – Use “bad” with descriptive verbs (look, feel, sound, taste) and “badly” with all other verbs. “The soccer team looked bad because its members played badly.”

Boom, boon – “Boom” is a long pole extending from a mast and a long, movable arm used to maneuver a microphone. As a verb, it means to make a resonant sound or to progress rapidly. “Business is booming.” “Boon” refers to a benefit, especially in response to a request. “Lower interest rates are a boon to homeowners.”

Word Trippers are featured in The Door Opener, an ezine that helps you open doors to your dreams through the written word. Subscribe at http://www.barbaramcnichol.com or send an email to editor@barbaramcnichol.com
