President’s Message from Alan Rigg
NSA-Arizona 30th Anniversary Celebration
I have to admit I’m a little bit jealous. You see, I have only been a member of NSA-Arizona for a handful of years. I never had the privilege of meeting our founder Cavett Robert, and while I have some awareness of the history of our chapter, too many details are lacking. That’s why I can’t wait for May 10th to arrive.
Our May 10th meeting will be a 30th Anniversary Celebration of our chapter. We’re honored to have our entire meeting presented by and featuring honored past presidents of NSA-Arizona. Don Thoren will serve as master of ceremonies. Steven Cates will tell us about the origin of NSA and the formation of NSA-Arizona. Past Presidents Mike Hayashi, Naomi Rhode, Glenna Salsbury, and Ed Scannell will share lessons learned along with humorous stories and anecdotes.
Your Board of Directors and Executive Director Gwen Henson will do everything we can to get the word out about this awesome celebration meeting. But we need your help. If you know anyone who has been involved with NSA-Arizona in the past and has fallen out of touch, please invite them to the upcoming 30th Anniversary Celebration. Ask them to go to our website at www.nsa-arizona.com or contact Gwen Henson to register.
Get ready for a heck of a party. We’d love for them…and YOU…to join the fun!
Alan Rigg, NSA-Arizona President 2007-2008

Chris Clarke-Epstein: Thinking for Others: How Speakers Create Value for their Clients and Audiences
What do people really want from speakers? Information, of course. But they could get that from reading a book. What they want from us are the insights, stories, and enthusiasm that can help them turn information into action! During this interactive session you’ll be challenged to look at your expertise from a different perspective, clarify your messages, and think about what you really do for your audiences. You’ll uncover creative ways to learn what your audiences want and need to learn about your subject areas. You and your audiences will be glad you’ve decided to think on their behalf.

Learning From NSA Greats: A Speaker’s Most Valuable Asset
The speaking industry has become what it is today because of a few individuals who had a vision of the industry and the passion to make it come alive. Many lessons were learned along the way. The learning never stops!
Lessons from NSA Greats are contributed by Bill Johnson, CSP, a charter member and NSA’s first executive vice president from 1975 to 1983. Bill was honored as Life Member of NSA National and NSA-Arizona in 2008.
What is a speaker’s most valuable asset? If you talked to a group of Circuit City Sales people, the answer would likely be the weight of the magnet or transient response. The less experienced might say the size of the cone. Or a wise guy might respond “Woofer or tweeter?”
What about for a professional speaker-the human being, not the stereo component?
I passionately believe the best assets are his or her repertoire of stories and ability to paint CLEAR word pictures. (That means avoiding unfamiliar words and acronyms.) Those who heard Karyn Ruth White at our recent NSA-Arizona meeting experienced a “Lab” in great story telling and realized how the two-stories and clarity of words-go hand in hand. Just think of so good stories that get told poorly. Their impact dies. Why? Because clear word pictures weren’t painted.
When people say, “I just don’t have any good stories,” be wary. In everyday life, almost everyone tells stories. So why not tell them well-and make your points memorable in the process. Take your story and figure out how to convey a point that fits it and makes it easy to remember.
Here is my suggestion: Create a “story history” of your life. Get a spiral binder and log all your memorable events, good and bad. Begin with the VERY first thing you remember in your life, something that you can still see in your imagination. Skip a few pages and begin a new chapter titled Grade School. Then skip a few more pages and write under the title High School. (The skipped pages are to fill in later when you have new remembrances.) Recall projects, jobs, activities, teachers, friends-on and on-in your high school life. Voila! From these pages, you’ll have a treasure trove of people and events you remember. By doing this, you’ll realize that almost everything you remember comes with a “point” or “lesson learned” that you can share.
I predict that once you get past writing your High School page, your business-life stories will come to you in volumes. (Leave blank pages along the way for additions to your stories in each time frame and keep them in chronological order.) Finally, when you feel ready to use a story, speak it into your digital recorder. Then type it out. Then tighten it and add word pictures. Record it again, listening to it several times for ways to add clarity and color.
With your own stories told using clear word pictures, you’re on your way to being a better speaker-the human kind!
Next month: The two most important TOOLS for a speaker to own!
Word Trippers from the Platform
Pay special attention to these featured Word Trippers that are so commonly misused, it’s easy to mistake them for correct.
Convince, persuade You “convince” someone of an idea but “persuade” someone to take action. Therefore, it’s correct to say, “He convinced me it would taste good” but incorrect to say, “He convinced me to taste it.” Instead, say, “He persuaded me to taste it.”
Delegate, relegate “Delegate” means to send another as one’s representative; to commit or entrust to another. “She delegates her assistant to represent her at the meeting.” “Relegate” carries a connotation of status and means to consign to an inferior position, place, or condition. “He relegates the less pleasant tasks to his assistant.”
Desirous, desirable Use “desirous” to mean having desire and “desirable” to describe a desired person or thing. “When having a treat is desirous, an ice cream cone is the most desirable choice.”
