NSA-Arizona President’s Message from Beth Terry

You may remember a Hawaiian word from my first meeting as your President: Kokua (Koh Koo Ah). It means to collaborate, help, assist, lift up—much like the spirit of Cavett. Many members have offered their Kokua to our chapter: Board members, meeting volunteers, presenters, Candidates who help throw our Fiesta and Holiday parties, our committee chairs (including the editor of this paper, Barbara McNichol, who helps me sound more eloquent than I already am .) We could not have an association without all your support. Thank you!

Today I would like to honor three people for their Kokua to our chapter. So often they have gone over and above, providing wonderful support without fanfare. Yet without them, we wouldn’t be in such wonderful shape. Those three people are:

  • Gwen Henson
  • Rich Hamilton
  • Steve Allen

Gwen, our Executive Director, is a “voice of experience, history, and knowledge” at our Board meetings and Retreat. She carries with her knowledge from being Executive Director of the Arizona Book Publishing Association, and from being involved with our chapter for many years. Thank you, Gwen, for your wisdom, insight, and support.

Rich Hamilton is both a presenter (he’s the “Disney Outsider”) and a web designer. Rich has put hours into designing and revamping our website http://www.nsa-arizona.org. The beautiful new site is packed with information and easy to use. Thank you, Rich, for your dedication to NSA-Arizona.

Steve Allen is not only an attorney; he speaks on history and patriotism in America. As a member of our Board, he has assisted us with his knowledge of non-profit boards and corporate law. He has also put hours into helping us keep things operating. Thank you, Steve, for your support and your knowledge.

And thanks to all of you for your continued support of National Speakers Association of Arizona. As Gwen often says, “It is a warm and welcoming place.” Thank you all for making it that way.

A hui hou (till we meet again)
Beth Terry, NSA-Arizona President 2005-2006

When was the last time you had the opportunity to hear a living legend? You’ll have this chance when Charles “T for Tremendous” Jones comes to wow us with his wisdom and insight.

What will Charlie speak about? To be honest, we actually don’t know. He’d prefer to surprise us. But then again, if Michelangelo offered to paint a painting for our chapter, would we ask him what it would look like before he was finished? If Shakespeare agreed to write a play for us, would we want to know the plot before he had written it? Not likely.

If you’d like to see a living legend in action and learn what it takes to become one yourself, you can’t miss this meeting!

Charlie Jones entered the sales field at the age of 6. He sold Liberty and Collier magazines and received numerous awards before moving up to his own Kool-Aid and ice cream business at age 8. He entered the insurance business at age 22 with one of America’s Top Ten companies. At 23, he was awarded his agency’s Most Valuable Associate award. Ten years later, he received his company’s highest award for recruiting, manpower and development, and business management. At 37, his organization exceeded $100 million in force, at which time he retired and started Life Management Service and Executive Books to share his experiences through books, seminars, and consulting. Charlie is the author of 10 books, including Life Is Tremendous, which has two million copies in print in eight languages.

Thousands of audiences on all seven continents have experienced non-stop laughter as Mr. “T” shared his ideas over a half-century. He’s been featured in the Dynamic Achievers World Network television series, the Automotive Sales Training Network satellite training service, Insights Into Excellence video and audio training series, and Nightingale’s Executive Treasury of Humor series. More than a thousand companies have used two of his films, The Leading Edge and Learning: A Tremendous Experience.

Enough said. Come meet Charlie and see for yourself why he’s Tremendous!

VOE (Voice of Experience) – Neil Dempster
Mine Your Market–Tracking for Success
Do you need help to increase revenues and, most important, ensure that you get every piece of spin-off business you deserve? Statistics suggest that it costs five to ten times more to acquire a new client than to hold on to existing ones.

This month’s VOE Neil Dempster provides you with the tools, techniques, and technology to mine your market more effectively. In his talk, he demonstrates the system he used to take one speech in 1998 and turn it into a million dollars (and counting!).

MC for the day’s program – Bob Kelly

NSA-Arizona Members Featured in New Book
No one will ever know if they’ve succeeded until they define success for themselves. Well-known mentors, coaches, public speakers, authors, entrepreneurs, and business giants have reached for it, seized it, and in some cases let it go in favor of a different measure of achievement. That’s the theme of a recently released book, Seizing Your Success.

Two NSA-Arizona members—Kathy Marcil and Kitty Wiemelt—are among 80 people featured in Seizing Your Success, part of the series “Wake Up . . . Live the Life You Love.” An addiction therapist, Kathy writes about the character traits that went in to making her father a remarkable—and successful—high school principal. Kitty, a healthcare consultant, shares her experiences of having been laid off and fired on more than one occasion, and how she not only succeeded, but thrived.

Kathy and Kitty are in good company; the 80+ authors in this book include Wayne Dyer and Deepak Chopra. Contact kathy@kmarcil.com and kitty@kittywiemelt.com for details.

Speaking Retreat January 13-15, 2006
Marcia Reynolds, CSP, international keynote speaker, will host a private retreat in Phoenix January 13-15 to focus on stories and style. Attendees will leave the retreat with a powerful personal style, three well-developed stories, and more. An exclusive group of 6-8 people will meet for two and a half days of coaching your material to perfection. You’ll move up from giving lackluster presentations to delivering rousing speeches that motivate action, influence decisions, and drive people to purchase products and services. Reserve now to guarantee a seat! Contact Marcia at Marcia@OutsmartYourBrain.com for more information.

Authors and Speakers Roundtable
Authors and Speakers Roundtable, sponsored by Arizona Small Business Association, meets the third Wednesday of each month. All are welcome between 11:30 am to 1 pm. Bring your own lunch if you choose; drinks are provided. Each month features an author who tells about his or her authorship journey and challenges. Great information! 4130 E. Van Buren, Phoenix 602-265-4563. www.asba.com. Monthly meeting is no charge for ASBA members ($125 for annual dues); $20 for guests. This ASBA Roundtable is chaired by Bill Johnson, CSP.

What business-building events of interest to NSA-Arizona members are coming up? What new books and tapes will you launch soon? Send your announcements to Barbara at editor@barbaramcnichol.com

Word Trippers from the Platform
Barbara McNichol helps you find the exact word for your presentation or written piece.

National, nationwide – “National” means pertaining or belonging to a nation, or relating to one’s nationality. “Nationwide” describes something existing throughout a whole nation (synonymous with “across the country”). “The downturn of the national economy concerned wage earners nationwide.”

Number, amount – A reader points out how often he hears broadcasters say, “Consider the amount of dollars it takes…” or “the amount of stores we have is less than our competitors.” In both phrases, the word “number” should be used instead of “amount” and “fewer” should be used instead of “less.” Here’s the rule for both word trippers: If you can quantify the noun (that means count the objects), use “number” or “fewer.”

Obstinate, stubborn – “Obstinate” connotes unreasonably persistent behavior and is often used negatively. “Stubborn” indicates a resistance to change that may or may not be admirable. “Contrary to the evidence, he was obstinate in his belief that the suspect was guilty. This time, his stubbornness didn’t pay off.”

Word Trippers are featured in The Door Opener, an ezine that helps you open doors to your dreams through the written word. Subscribe at http://www.barbaramcnichol.com or send an email to editor@barbaramcnichol.com

Website Wisdom
Keep in mind the “little things” from Webmaster Kendall SummerHawk that can make your site better.

Tip for November: Always include a specific result for each service you offer on your website. Listing just the features of what you deliver doesn’t mean much. Instead, tie each feature to a strong benefit or result. Let the strength of your writing sing the message, without relying on exclamation points or capitalized words.

Worth Repeating from Charlie “Tremendous” Jones
Here’s a taste of what to expect November 12.

If you can’t be happy where you are, it’s a cinch you can’t be happy where you ain’t.

You will be the same person in five years as you are today except for the people you meet and the books you read.

Everyone has a success mechanism and a failure mechanism. The failure mechanism goes off by itself. The success mechanism only goes off with a goal. Every time we write down and talk about a goal we push the button to start the success mechanism.
