NSA-Arizona President’s Message from Joan Koerber-Walker
When I was a little girl, my mother taught me that good things happen when I said “the magic word.” Soon I could be found skipping around the house saying “please Mommy” for every childish wish. And lucky for me, many of those wishes were granted. But as I have grown, I’ve learned an important lesson. While “please” is important, another ever-more-powerful word isn’t used nearly enough. Six little letters that truly work magic – the most powerful message in the world – THANKS!
When we say “please” we are asking for a boon, but when we say “thanks” we acknowledge a gift or consideration from someone for doing something. “Thanks” recognizes others for what they do for us – sometimes it’s something BIG and other times it’s something little. But every time we say “thanks,” it forms a connection between two or more people, acknowledging a kindness given, a courtesy, a gift.
The power of “Thanks” touches us in our personal relationships, our professional relationships, and crosses over to gifts from people we may not ever even meet.
We all say “Thank You” – we are polite people after all. We thank our co-workers and colleagues as we go through our work day. We thank the woman who holds the door for us as we enter a store, the valet who returns our cars, the server at a restaurant, or the young man who bags and takes our groceries to the car – sometimes when the temperature tops 100 degrees.
But when you say “thanks,” are you just offering a polite reply or truly expressing your gratitude? Have you thought beyond the politeness of this word?
At NSA-Arizona, we have so much to be thankful for. Our chapter is strong and continues to grow in both membership, through its valuable programs, and a myriad of offerings. Here is a short excerpt from my very long and heart-felt Thank You NSA-AZ List:
-
Thanks to our committed board of directors and hardworking committee chairs who bring value to all of us with innovative programs and ideas. (You should see all the emails that fly back and forth each month!)
-
Thanks to Gwen Henson – our awesome executive director – who welcomes and supports us and who makes my job so easy.
-
Thanks to our many volunteers – you are the power that makes everything happen.
-
Thanks to each of you for choosing to make NSA-Arizona all it is and will be.
Oh, I almost forgot! “THANKS” for reading my Thanksgiving message.

Announcement – New Meeting Fees Start in January 2007
As you know, NSA-Arizona meetings provide excellent value. For more than five years, we have held meeting fees at the same rate. But times change and costs increase, so effective January 2007, our new meeting fees will be $30 for members and $45 for guests (late registration: $40 for members and $55 for guests).
But you, as a chapter member, can hold back time and enjoy 2006 rates in 2007. How? In January, you can purchase a January through June 2007 meetings package for just $150. That’s $25 a meeting for these 6 January to June sessions, not any 6 meetings. Where else can you get 6 yummy breakfast buffets and 24 hours of networking, inspiration, and information for less?

WOW Us with Your Diamonds
Want to be an online contributor to NSA’s Wow and Diamonds columns, which will be now be featured on Speaker magazine’s web page link starting in January? Here are the editorial requirements for each column:
WOW (400 words)
After reading the article, does the reader say: “WOW! That’s something I can really use. I really appreciate PEG educating me about this!” Think of it as creating WOW moments for readers, not reporting on one’s individual WOW moment, what I learned at a PEG session, or why someone should join PEG. Only articles that use the special expertise of PEG members to educate ALL readers about a unique niche.
Diamonds (400 words)
Highlight a gem that you’ve received at a chapter meeting. The article should cover the following:
Tip–Share a tip or advice that you’ve received, with enough detail that it will be useful to readers.
Action–Describe how you translated the tip or advice into action in your business.
Outcome–Describe the results you’ve achieved by applying what you learned, i.e., a measure of your success.

We meet two times a month, the second and fourth Tuesday mornings, 8:45 – 11:00, in NSA headquarters, 1500 S. Priest Drive, Tempe.
You are welcome to visit without prior notification. After attending two times as a Lab member, you are qualified to present or to simply attend and learn vicariously from the critiques of others’ speeches. Come and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow speakers as well as benefit from the feedback.
November 14th speakers are Maggie Hunts, Eileen Roth, open slot. November 28th speakers are Jackie Dishner, Janet Jacobsen, Mary Switzer.
Friends Honor Bill Johnson November 11
A special celebration honoring Bill Johnson, NSA’s first Executive Director, will be held at the Phoenix Country Club on the evening of November 11.
Says one of the event organizers Joel Weldon, “Webster’s dictionary defines a FRIEND as ‘a person one is fond of, an ally and a supporter’ and a MENTOR as ‘a wise advisor, a teacher or coach.’ Think of the people you know who fit both definitions. Is one person on your list Bill Johnson? Yes, the same Bill Johnson who served as the first Executive Director of NSA. The same Bill Johnson who created the Cavett Award. And the same Bill Johnson who has coached, trained and given feedback to thousands of speakers to assist in their careers, their audios and videos, their microphones, their PowerPoint presentations, and even the shine on their shoes!”
Friends of BJ have organized this evening, which will begin with cocktails at 6:00 pm and will include a wonderful Phoenix Country Club dinner, amazing speakers, a funny emcee, roasts, toasts and a gift for Bill, all for $95/person. This will be an evening filled with appreciation for him, filled with laughter and tears, great food, and a large collection of some of the world’s most renowned speakers.
To attend this fabulous event, contact Judy and Joel Weldon by email info@successcomesincans.com or phone 480-948-5633 and we will send you a reservation form. Also begin working on your letter of appreciation to Bill and contact us if you want to be on the speaking portion of the event.
P.S. Bill knows about the event, but not all the details!

Extend your reach beyond your presentation with these tips from Kendall SummerHawk.
Before you go into the studio or get on the telephone to record your next information product, be sure and dress the part. Even though your listener can’t see you, what you’re wearing will influence how you feel and sound, which comes across in your recording. Put on an outfit that makes you feel energized and confident, include wearing your best shoes. For women, add a touch of lipstick (or cologne) and you’re ready to sound your best!

Word Trippers from the Platform
Don’t let these Word Trippers from Barbara McNichol trip you up.
Forward, foreword – At times, the section at the front of the book is incorrectly titled “Forward” (to move ahead) instead of “Foreword.” To remember the correct spelling, separate “foreword” into “fore” (to go before) and “word” (the words/ideas that follow).
Genial, congenial – “Genial” describes a gracious manner contributing to a pleasant experience while “congenial” refers to an agreeable disposition, someone’s nature. “The host created a genial atmosphere for the congenial friends who gathered at the party.”
Glimpse, glance – “Glance” refers to taking a fast look at something while a “glimpse” is quickly sighting something. “I glance over my shoulder to catch a glimpse of traffic behind me.”
A Bonus from Our October Meeting Sponsor
Shauna A. Wekherlien, CPA, MTax, “Tax Goddess”
Remember: NSA-Arizona members get 2 F-R-E-E hours of consulting (Expires 12/15/06)
Here are 3 more hints and tax tricks, specifically for speakers, which you can use for your business this year.
1. Don’t Forget Per Diems
When you are traveling outside your “home” town your daily expenses for meals, lodging, etc. can be calculated in one of two ways: Actual Expenses or Per Diem. If you travel to NYC, the per Diem rates can be as high as $62/day just for food, so if you ate at McDonald’s 3 meals a day and the per diem rate is higher, it may be better to track WHERE you go and not WHAT you ate!
2. Separate Tips from Meals and Entertainment
Both the tax and the tip that you pay on your bill are deductible 100%, whereas the actual food portion may only be deductible up to 50%
3. Travel On the Weekend and Book Appointment both Friday and Monday
If you travel on the weekend and book appointments the Friday before and the Monday after, you to have the weekend free in the city and still write off ALL of the travel expenses while you are there because you could not come home for the weekend.
