President’s Message from Alan Rigg
First Annual “Spirit of NSA Day” on November 14, 2007 – How Can YOU Participate?
At the October 2007 meeting, I announced a new, annual, NSA-sponsored celebration: Spirit of NSA Day. Spirit of NSA Day was created to honor NSA Founder Cavett Robert and continue NSA’s legacy of sharing.
This year’s NSA President Mark LeBlanc and the Board of Directors have designated November 14, 2007, as the first Spirit of NSA Day. This is a national day of advocacy encouraging NSA members to support one another. The date has special meaning because it is the 100th anniversary of Cavett’s birth.
This year, and on every November 14 going forward, Spirit of NSA Day will encourage NSA members to:
- Focus on giving back
- Provide genuine support to speaking colleagues
- Take time to connect, help, mentor or refer business to other members without any expectation of reciprocation
You’re asked to make a conscious choice to continue NSA’s legacy of giving in an individual way. Here are some suggestions from Mark LeBlanc of how we can all play a part in Spirit of NSA Day:
- Provide peer-to-peer encouragement
- Introduce an NSA colleague to a potential client
- Refer business to an NSA colleague
- Mentor an emerging speaker
- Share the story of how you are participating in Spirit of NSA Day at http://www.MyNSA.org
Please help the legacy of giving continue by taking part in Spirit of NSA Day on November 14, 2007. Thank you for your time and consideration!
Sincerely,
Alan Rigg President, NSA-Arizona
P.S. In honor of the first annual Spirit of NSA Day, November 14, 2007, I’m hosting a teleseminar on buildings sales for your speaking business. See details in the BUSINESS BUILDING BULLETIN section of this newsletter.

Rockin’ With NSA - Mark Mayberry
To have a speaking career that “rocks,” just having a great speech is not enough. It takes a thorough understanding of the business side of the speaking profession, especially when it comes to marketing.
Mark Mayberry understands “the business side” of the speaking profession. You won’t want to miss his informative, fast-paced presentation where you’ll learn how to increase your revenues and profits. You’ll discover ways to effectively stay in touch with clients between engagements, find business in your own neighborhood, turn a casual comment into a great reference letter, and so much more!
Mark has been “rockin’” as a full-time professional speaker and member of NSA since 1990. He was president of Fashion Connection, an apparel company that went from zero to $7 million in sales in less than five years. He’s the co-author of Building The Dream Workforce. He facilitates strategic planning sessions and helps companies and associations develop their vision and values. Mark has been vice-chair of two NSA Winter Workshops and the 2004 NSA Convention.
VOE: Neil Dempster, CSP
From Sound Check to Pay Check–It’s always the “little details” that bite your butt!
The audiences we serve expect it; the meeting planners who book us demand it; the finance company that holds your mortgage prays that you’ll do it—that is, deliver a flawless, brilliantly executed speech. But how do you make this happen when technology keeps changing, when audience expectations keep increasing, when a/v techs are never present when you need them, when clients keep changing what they want you to speak about . . .. Have I made my point yet?
Lesson learned: No one else cares how well your speech goes as much as YOU should! Neil’s thought-provoking presentation will deliver common-sense knowledge about the steps needed to go from “sound check to pay check” by concentrating on the ingredient that influence your success most—YOU!
Neil Dempster, CSP, is vice president of Clearview Performance Systems, a performance management, training, and consulting organization. His background includes mechanical engineering and business administration. Currently, he’s completing his PhD in industrial and organizational psychology.
Stephanie Angelo stephanie@hressential.com heads the Program Committee 2007-2008.

Word Trippers from the Platform
These featured Word Trippers are perennial “stoppers” when it comes to being accurate. I encourage you to pay SPECIAL attention to them—they’re so commonly misused, it’s easy to mistake them for correct.
That, who – “That” relates to things while “who” relates to people. “I have a friend who did me a favor, one that I greatly appreciated.”
Their, there, they’re – “Their” (adjective) shows someone possessing something. “It is their wish.” “There” (adverb) means a location or place. “There is a place for us.” “They’re” (contraction) means “they are” – the apostrophe takes the place of the missing letter. “They’re coming over for a drink.”
That, which – Use “that” when the phrase that follows is essential to the meaning of the sentence. “We provide guides that serve as an alternative to our programs.” Use “which” when the phrase gives information but isn’t critical to understanding the sentence. “The self-teaching guides, which complement services we offer, provide an alternative to our programs.” You can also omit the phrase and say, “The guides provide an alternative to our programs.”
