October 2005 News Flash
The Magic of Community
NSA-Arizona President’s Message from Beth Terry
What a fabulous meeting we had in September! With 102 attendees, we set the record for our chapter! Thanks to all who made it happen. We are grateful to Patricia Fripp for a fabulous presentation. Thanks to Don Thoren for doing a great job of MCing; thanks to Dave Sherman for bringing Fripp in; thanks to Bill Johnson for taping it so we can order copies (email gwen@nsa-arizona.org). And thanks to board and membership committee members for welcoming those in attendance.
Remember the Hawaiian words I gave you in last month’s News Flash? We all benefit when members offer their Kokua (Koh-koo-ah)which means “to help, support, reach out, be there, lift up.” The people you see so often in front of the room, in the newsletters, and in the community have embraced this concept. They’ve made a commitment to the chapter and to the profession of speaking.
Funny, I had one attendee tell me that there were cliques at NSA-Arizona, that the same people were always out front. I said, “Then get out front! We welcome you there!” It isn’t that hard. I didn’t get involved with this chapter until February, 2003. Yep, 2 1/2 years ago. I held back when I first moved here because I had some healing to do. But when I made a decision to come to the meetings, I also made a commitment to the chapter, got on the board, ran the candidates program, and was elected presidentall in that short span of time.
We have three new members who have been in our chapter for less than a year and are actively involved in leadership. Joe Contrera came to us from Chicago and Joe Hammer from the NSA chapter in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; both were willing to step up to the plate immediately and run for the NSA-Arizona Board. Loretta Love Huff, also a new member, is co-chairing the membership committee with Deborah Gardner. Their willingness to commit to these endeavors not only helps the chapter; it also helps them get to know more of you.
You see many of the same faces because board members make a two-year commitment to the office. If they take the next step and get involved as an officer, that’s a minimum four-year commitment. Our succession plan assures both continuity and solid fiscal stewardship. We need committed people to keep this ship afloat and we would love your Kokua in making that happen.
Cavett Robert said, “We don’t divide the pie, we make the pie bigger.” We do that by participating, being there for each other, looking for ways to make NSA better. Fripp said that she loves to help people who have helped her. Many professional members are like that. Does that mean they will give you their leads or coach you for free? No, but it does mean they will know who you are, help you when they can, and keep you in mind if they hear of something that fitsthe essence of networking. It’s all about Kokua.
Thanks for making NSA-Arizona a wonderful organization. A hui hou (till we meet again).
Beth Terry,
NSA-Arizona President 2005-2006

In the world of speaking, it is essential to always have a strong opening. When it comes to connecting with others, it’s also essential that you have a strong opening. How you look, what you say, and how you carry yourself can either help create the beginning of a long-term relationship or destroy your one chance to land that big client.

NSA-Arizona’s Community Service Project
This year, our chapter’s community service project provides speaking and media training to local high school students from “Students Supporting Brain Tumor Research” or SSBTR. We’ll hold a training session that prepares students to make presentations at local schools with the goal of gaining support, contributions, and volunteers. We’re scheduled to work with the students on Saturday, October 28th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
You can contribute to our community by encouraging and supporting these young people in delivering their message. We understand the power and privilege of the platform. Let’s say “thanks” to those who have helped us by sharing our talents and experience with these young speakers. To be a part of this great event, contact Joan Koerber-Walker at 480-921-3933 or email jkw@corepurpose.net.
About SSBTR: The Students Supporting Brian Tumor Research (SSBTR) is the largest non-profit in the state that’s totally run by students. Its annual Walkathon to benefit the Brain Tumor Society, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, and the Barrow Neurological Institute, was launched to address the fact that, after leukemia, brain tumors are the number one cancer killer of teenagers. In the past four years, the Walkathon has raised $7,500, $30,000, $75,000, and $118,000 respectively. And, with expenses less than 10% of revenues, at least $.90 of every dollar directly supports the group’s mission: to help find a cure for brain tumors.

Word Trippers from the Platform
Barbara McNichol helps you find the exact word for your presentation or written piece.
Over, more than – “Over” implies a geographic position; “more than” means an increased number. “The lamp hangs over the table.” “There are more than 400 audience members.” (As our language changes, though, “over” has become commonly accepted for both uses. I’m a purest and prefer “more than.”)
Palate, palette, pallet – “Palate” refers to the roof of the mouth and one’s sense of taste. “Palette” is a board used by painters for holding and mixing colors; it also refers to the range of colors used by artists. “Viewing a painting created from the palette of a fine artist enhances the appeal of gourmet food on one’s palate.” “Pallet” is a small, low platform on which goods are stored or moved. “Cartons of canned goods are delivered to the store on a pallet.”

Website Wisdom
Keep in mind the “little things” from Webmaster Kendall SummerHawk that can make your site better.
Tip for October: Did you know that the most read section of your website is the caption under a photo or image? Even better, if you make at least a portion of the caption a clickable link, it is likely to receive the highest number of click-throughs than anything else on the page. So if you have “naked” photos, it’s time to dress them up with a catchy, compelling, clickable call-to-action caption.
Humor Tip
Thanks to June Cline, CSP, for this tip from her website www.junecline.com
* R.I.S.K. means “Release that Inner-Silly Kid” who is dying to come out and play. Take one significant R.I.S.K. weekly. It takes courage. Go for headline quality.

Worth Repeating
“As Sir Laurence Olivier said about actingand it applies to speaking‘the art is hiding the art.’”
- Patricia Fripp, CSP, CPAE, at our September 10 meeting
