President’s Message from Neil Dempster

WOW! What a meeting on September 13! For the 104 who attended, I’m sure your lives and businesses have been enriched immeasurably. Everybody walked away with several ideas that can be implemented now. (Please see Tips for Workshop Follow-through in this newsletter from subject matter expert Bonnie Mattick to get the most out of our meetings.)

A common ailment each of us falls prey to is this: we get busy! That forces us to make a decision between conflicting priorities (i.e., “Do I have time to go to NSA or not?”). Your Board is committed to increasing the level of value you receive to help make your decision easier. You’ll find the answers you seek in our chapter. Your commitment to any one (or all!) of our learning events reinforces your own commitment to personal and professional growth. The LEARNING never stops!

Our next monthly meeting features the incredible Dr. Janet Lapp. When I spoke with her at NSA’s convention in New York, she told me she’ll deliver ideas she’s never shared with NSA members before! Don’t miss this opportunity to see a pro who has built an incredible speaking business from the ground up. Her story is amazing!

Sincerely,

Neil Dempster, MBA, CSP
NSA-Arizona President 2008-2009

Dr. Janet Lapp: Speaking at the Edge

10:45 am – 11:45 am

Dr. Janet Lapp believes in both flying her plane and living her life at the edge—on the border of order and chaos where both growth and opportunity lie. She will show you how, in both constructing and delivering a keynote, to create emotional experiences for audiences that will lead them toward their own edge. She’ll also discuss the three top reasons speakers fail to make this happen. You will leave Janet’s session with—

  • a template for constructing your own impactful keynote
  • ways to attack three demons that keep you from standing out
  • motivation to push your own performance to the edge.

Dr. Janet Lapp, CSP, CPAE, has established a global reputation for turning problems into opportunities. One of North America’s most in-demand presenters, Janet is a licensed clinical psychologist, speaker and author. She is also the creator/host of the award-winning CBS series “Keep Well,” editor of The Change Letter, and author of Dancing with Tigers, Plant your Feet Firmly in Mid-Air, and Positive Spin. A former professor, researcher, clinician, and registered nurse, Janet was born and raised in Canada, and now lives in San Diego.

  • Target the right media
  • Prepare a clever angle
  • Control the interview
  • Maneuver your message
  • Capitalize on the results

An authority on booth selling, display design and exhibit marketing, she has 35 years experience in sales and marketing. She loves to share her money-making techniques on exhibiting, networking and obtaining publicity. Frequently quoted in the press, Susan writes for industry publications and has written four books. Candidate Program: Ready, Aim, Fire!

This program directed by Dr. Michelle May continues its series based on “Ready, Aim, Fire” from The Wealthy Speaker. Candidates are spending this quarter in the Ready Phase – picking a lane and developing a great speech.

Please join us for our free monthly teleseminars on the third Saturday of the month from 11:00 to 12:00. The next call is October 18th with guest June Cline, CSP: “Want More Money? Get More Funny!” Candidates and all participants in the Wealthy Speaker Kick-Off event will receive a specific email with additional details.

Recent Board Change

Hilari Weinstein has stepped down as President-Elect of our chapter, continuing as a Director. Dr. Michelle May is moving her term forward to become President-Elect. She brings years of board experience in healthcare to NSA-Arizona and her strong leadership has already benefited our chapter in the past two years. Please take a moment to thank Michelle for her on-going commitment. The Nominating Committee will convene to identify candidates for Vice-President.

Meet the Board

To help answer your questions about what your Board is up to, we’re introducing a monthly segment that profiles a single board member in an informative interview format. This month features Dr. Michelle May, our President-Elect and co-chair of the Candidate Program.

Michelle, describe the changes that have been implemented in our Candidate Program? We have heard again and again that our Candidate Members want more structure and clearer direction to get from point A to B and point B to C. This year, we’re using Jane Atkinson’s book The Wealthy Speaker as our template and curriculum. We’ve divided it into segments based on Jane’s “Ready, Aim, Fire” formula, plus added live sessions and monthly teleseminars to address specific topics.

What feedback do you hear about what’s been implemented so far? Feedback has been tremendous, which confirms we’re meeting this need for Candidate Members. We’ve also received helpful suggestions for future programming. We’ll continue to ask and listen as the program evolves.

As the speaking industry becomes more complex, what are the top three things to keep in mind as we grow our businesses? First, I’m a big believer in experts who speak; when we focus on becoming experts in our specific topic areas, it serves the professional speaking industry well. Second, we have to be great on the platform. It’s important to get the help, attend the meetings, and do what’s needed to deliver messages effectively so audiences can learn what they need to learn. Third is remembering we are business people, which means running a business efficiently, effectively, and with integrity so we can be in this profession for the long haul.

Tips for Workshop Follow-through

By Bonnie F. Mattick, M.A. Ed., MBA

Whenever we leave a fabulous workshop or NSA meeting, we have the best intentions of applying new ideas in our business—before the need to clear out emails and voicemails swamps us. So we set aside the new learning until “later.”

Next time you attend a workshop, apply these quick tips during and after. You’ll be sure to get more out of it.

Quick Tips:

  • Write down your goals prior to attending the program.
  • Set up meetings or group discussions about “buy-in” and support the program content.
  • Create a checklist of items you can review when back in your office.
  • Create an “applicability worksheet” that describes how you will apply the ideas.
  • Share this worksheet with other attendees as part of your follow-through plan.

There is success in numbers. The more people you involve in your support plan, the more will get on board with the process.

Word Trippers from the Platform

By Barbara McNichol editor@barbaramcnichol.com

Improve how you use words on the platform! Don’t let these pesky pairings trip you up.

Compel, impel – “Compel” means to force, drive, or constrain, especially to a course of action. “Impel” means to urge forward or incite; propel. “The servant was compelled to explore the dark cave because his master was impelled by curiosity to discover its secrets.”

Disburse, disperse – “Disburse” means to pay out, especially from a fund; to distribute. “Disperse” means to scatter; spread widely; break up and vanish. “As soon as he had disbursed all the candy, the crowd of children dispersed.”

Exacerbate, exasperate – To “exacerbate” is to increase the severity, bitterness, or violence of something. To “exasperate” is to irritate, extremely annoy someone, provoke to a high degree. “By trying to fix the sink himself, he only exacerbated the problem and exasperated his wife before he finally called a plumber.”
