The Magic of Community

NSA-Arizona President’s Message
from Beth Terry

Greetings Members!

We want you to be as jazzed as your board members are about the new year at NSA-Arizona. I am looking forward to being your president and serving all of you!

To that end, I want to share three powerful concepts that have guided me for years. Of course they come from Hawaiian words; I can’t help myself. These words can both guide us as a chapter and support you in your own journey. They are:

  • Kuleana (koo•lee•ah•nah)
Responsibility, Accountability – Know what your job is and do it. Do your job to the best of your abilities and let others do their jobs.
  • Kinaole (kee•nah•oh•lay)
Do it right the first time, at the right time, in the right way, for the right reasons.
  • Kokua (Koh•koo•ah)
Help others; cooperate; collaborate: “The Cavett Spirit.”

We held our NSA-Arizona Board Retreat on August 5 and accomplished much. Thank you, board members, for a tremendously productive meeting. (Please attend our chapter meeting September 10 so you can meet and thank them personally.)

Let me recap highlights of our Retreat:

MISSION FOR THE YEAR: NSA-Arizona exists to help the professional speaker connect to the resources needed to increase the value of his or her business.

GOALS: To increase membership, increase volunteerism, enhance fiscal soundness, and improve visibility in the community.

OBJECTIVES: We are in the process of defining objectives for each committee to make these goals measurable and a reality. Here are a few we have identified:

Membership – We will increase membership by two new professional members each month. We need your help. Look at quality people in your circle who might benefit by belonging to NSA and bring them to a meeting. Introduce them to board members and membership committee members. When they join, make sure they let National know you sent them. Then you win a $25 certificate that’s good for any NSA national program—just for bringing in a new professional member.

Participation/volunteerism – Everyone wins when they volunteer. Not only do you feel more a part of the organization, you also have an opportunity to learn new skills and get to know your fellow speakers better. We encourage everyone in the chapter to get involved! (Note: if you want to be on any of our committees, look for the signs at the chapter meeting. The heads of those committees will be identified with a sign on their respective tables. We will also have a PowerPoint program running while you network so you can see who everyone is and what they are doing for you.)

Visibility – We are in the backyard of NSA’s National Headquarters and people are continually surprised to learn that. It’s high time we have more visibility. We are working toward that by having great speakers, great programs like the Chapter Meetings, Tuesday Morning Labs, Teleseminars, and Living Room Forums. Tell your friends about these events and be sure to attend them yourselves.

Publicity – We need a person to be in charge of our PR. If you or someone you know would like to take that on, please talk with Deb Christofferson, chair of the Commmunications /Media Committee.

Fiscal – Currently we have a little more than the required one-year coverage in reserves. We would like to maintain and strengthen that position by bringing in sponsors for each of our meetings.

Sponsors – Our purpose is threefold: First, we want to make vendors available to you who will help your business become stronger. Second, by partnering with suppliers in the industry, we also become more visible to the community. Third, we will help strengthen the fiscal position of the chapter without depending only on the membership.

Website – You will see some changes to the Website, thanks to Rich Hamilton, our ace Web guy and several board members. When the changes are closer to completion, Rich will write about them in News Flash.

Programs – We are kicking this year! Some amazing speakers are coming our way. Be sure you set your PDA to be at the chapter meeting the second Saturday of every month. Dave Sherman and his committee have done a great job. We are still looking for MCs and VOEs (Voices of Experience) for some of the meetings. Let Dave know if you have a recommendation or are interested.

Bylaws – Two Bylaw items needed tweaking, so the board has “tweaked” and you will get the proposed changes in an email blast for approval in the next few weeks.

Officers – We have two new officers rounding out your executive board. Voted into office at the retreat were Secretary Dave Sherman and Vice President Alan Rigg. They will be inducted at the September 10 meeting. Congratulations, gentlemen!

Thanks for listening! See you on our monthly Saturdays. A hui hou – till we meet again.

Beth Terry,
NSA-Arizona President 2005-2006

NSA-Arizona’s Teleseminar featuring Stephen Tweed, CSP

“How to Generate an Additional $100,000 with Multiple Streams of Revenue”

How would you like to generate an extra $100,000 in your speaking business? How would you like to earn more Non-airplane Income?? How would you like to make money by staying at home in your pajamas?

If you are interested in any of these three opportunities, then you’ll want to join us by phone on Thursday, September 22, at 6:00 p.m. for this powerful, information-packed teleseminar with NSA Past-President, Stephen Tweed, CSP.

Over the past five years, Stephen Tweed has re-engineered his speaking business to go from being “a consultant who speaks” to being CEO of a narrowly focused business strategy and information company with five major streams of revenue. Stephen will describe in specific details how he and his team at Leading Home Care are transforming their business, increasing their income, reaching more people, and having more fun. He’ll show you in real numbers how they generated over $100,000 in 2004 from teleseminars just like this one.

Mark your calendar now. Members will be emailed details about how to participate in this teleseminar. Stephen will post a pre-handout for the participants on the Internet.

NSA-Arizona’s Community Service Project

This year, our chapter’s community service project provides speaking and media training to local high school students from “Students Supporting Brain Tumor Research” or SSBTR. We’ll hold a training session that prepares students to make presentations at local schools with the goal of gaining support, contributions, and volunteers. We’re scheduled to work with the students on Saturday, October 28th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The preliminary list of topics includes:

  • Designing your message so that your audience “gets it.”
  • The importance of your opening and closing remarks.
  • Delivering your message with confidence and passion.
  • Performing like a pro.
  • Learning the tricks of media savvy.

This is a great opportunity to contribute to our community by encouraging and supporting these young people in delivering their message. We understand the power and privilege of the platform. Let’s say “thanks” to those who have helped us by sharing our talents and experience with these young speakers.

Our next planning meeting will be Monday, September 19th at 10:00 a.m. at Le Madeline (Camelback and 32nd Street). To be a part of this great event, contact Joan Koerber-Walker at 480-921-3933 or email jkw@corepurpose.net.

About SSBTR: The Students Supporting Brian Tumor Research (SSBTR) is the largest non-profit in the state that’s totally run by students. Its annual Walkathon to benefit the Brain Tumor Society, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, and the Barrow Neurological Institute, was launched to address the fact that, after leukemia, brain tumors are the number one cancer killer of teenagers. In the past four years, the Walkathon has raised $7,500, $30,000, $75,000, and $118,000 respectively. And, with expenses less than 10% of revenues, at least $.90 of every dollar directly supports the group’s mission – to help find a cure for brain tumors.

Sad news to share

We are saddened to let you know that Cadia Rose, the four-month-old daughter of Dulce de Leon, passed away on August 17, 2005. Dulce is a staff member of NSA National and has been a great friend to our chapter. Several members of NSA-Arizona attended the memorial service, and the board has sent a contribution in our chapter’s name to the memorial fund. If you would also like to contribute: The Cadia Rose Memorial Fund at Bank of America. Please keep Dulce and her family in your thoughts and prayers.

Speaker/Speech Development Lab

Fees for participation are $75/year for those expecting to attend half of the meetings or more; $20 per meeting for those who drop in randomly; $50 for random attendees who want to perform and receive feedback only on the day they attend.

Word Trippers from the Platform

Barbara McNichol helps you find the exact word for your presentation or written piece.

Precede, proceed – To “precede” is to go before; to “proceed” is to go forward. “When good planning precedes any trip, you can proceed to have a wonderful time.”

Presume, assume – Both imply taking something for granted but “assume” means supposing something is true while “presume” shows a stronger belief, close to expressing a dare. “I assume he’ll arrive when he says he will.” “Well, don’t presume you’re always right.”

Principal, principle – “Principal” as a noun means head of a school, a main participant, or a sum of money. “Principle” is a fundamental law or basic truth. “The school principal lives by her values and principles.” Use the “al” spelling when principal is used as an adjective. “The principal issue is calculating the principal plus interest correctly.”

Website Wisdom

Keep in mind the “little things” from Webmaster Kendall SummerHawk that can make your site better.

Tip for September: Most high-energy people want their websites to reflect their verve and spirit. But too many over use exclamation points in a misguided attempt to create energy and excitement. More than one or two exclamation points per page say “Amateur” instead of “Motivating.” It’s much more professional and sophisticated to create energy using bold writing, juicy phrasing, and inspiring metaphors, not punctuation.

Worth Repeating
