To Keynote or Not to Keynote—That is the Question

with Kathy Dempsey, CSP; Pamela Jett, CSP; Doug Stevenson, CSP; and Don Thoren, CPAE

Visualize yourself on a big stage with a beautiful set behind you and thousands of people watching, listening, and learning as you deliver a powerful keynote. You’ve earned the right to be on that stage because you are an experienced professional speaker. You’ve spoken in front of audiences large and small and your calendar is filled with exciting speaking opportunities all over the world.

If this sounds like a dream, that’s because it is the dream that many of us had when we joined the National Speakers Association. And dreams can come true, if you learn from those who have gone before you.

At the June NSA-Arizona meeting, we are bringing together a panel of our most experienced keynote speakers. They’re going to share with you how they made their dream come true and how they continue to sustain their speaking business year after year.

Did you know that an opening keynote is different than a closing keynote? What is it like to give a keynote in a foreign country with a simultaneous translator? How do you prepare differently for an audience of thousands versus hundreds? Does jet lag play a role in how you schedule your presentations? These are just some of the questions our panelists will answer.

You will hear from four very experienced keynote speakers who will share the good, the bad, and the not so wonderful about life as a keynote speaker. This is real world stuff, not some pipe dream fantasy of keynote success. These speakers have paid their dues and learned the ropes.

You’ll have a chance to ask questions that are specific to your topic and situation.

Some takeaways from this meeting will be:

  • Understand the four different types of keynote speeches
  • Learn how TED talks have had an impact on how people hire speakers
  • Discover tips and tricks for making the meeting planner look good
  • Decide whether life on the road is the right fit for your lifestyle
  • Learn secrets to working with speaker’s bureaus…or not
