President’s Message—With all the disruption we’re currently experiencing, what could go… right?

Here’s a question worth a few minutes of your time. With all the disruption we’re currently experiencing, what could go… right?

Might the nation with the world’s best healthcare succeed in stopping Covid19 short? Would a temporary pause in our schedules give us time to think (sweet), review our strategic business plan (important), and even our life’s plan (what it’s all about)? Can we complete books we have in the works (like the Tip Book-such a good idea a couple months ago)? I could go on, but why don’t you give it a try.

The point is, we’ve been here before. The loss of life from the HIV outbreak in the 80’s was measured in the tens of thousands (included my dear brother). There have been twenty viral outbreaks in the last forty years. Lessons learned from those are guiding the precautions we take today. Five years from now, reaping the gains of seeds planted today, we’ll probably need to be reminded these events occurred.

In the chapter, something else DID go right. We were able to book Michael Port and his Heroic Public Speaking message into our homes for this month’s Virtual Chapter Meeting. I’m so excited, he was at the top of our list this year, but unavailable…till now, that is. Stay healthy and optimistic, there’s a lot of good yet to happen. See you online!

April Candidate Program: Effective Experiences: Presence, Platform, and Process in a Virtual World with Natalie Sayer

How to keep material fresh and find new content with Chuck Reaves, CSP, CPAE

When we go into the grocery store and see some perishables on sale, what is the first thing we look for? The expiration date. Lower prices usually indicate an inferior product. In this case, the product is inferior because it is about to become useless for its original, intended purpose. Our content is like that.

Knowledge is our product; our delivery is our distribution. This includes our marketing, customer service, etc. The best distribution cannot overcome a dated—or out-of-date—product. The knowledge we used to build our businesses may become worthless, unless…

  1. We have a method for determining the product expiration date.
  2. We know which products to keep and which to discard.
  3. We know some alternatives for where we can discard the dated materials.
  4. We continually shop for new ideas:
    • From clients
    • From the marketplace
    • But NOT from other speakers

Chuck Reaves CSP, CPAE, CSO is the author of twelve books. He's made 5,000 presentations and has been a member of NSA for more than 35 years. In sales and leadership, he's pioneering new technologies and processes. Vistage honored him with the “Lifetime Achievement Award,” and he's been named “Impact Speaker of the Year.” The White House has invited him twice for his volunteer efforts. SPEAKERS LAB—Cultivate Your Speaking Skills Virtually

Wondering if there's more potential in your website, one sheet or email scripts?

Want to have your marketing materials critiqued in Speakers Lab style?

For the next two sessions, (4/14/20, and 4/28/20) Speakers Lab will be virtual!

As we were making the decision to continue or cancel lab, we wanted to find a way to add value, keep members healthy, and leverage Zoom.

What better way to use the time than to work on our businesses!

If you are a chapter member in good standing and have been to at least two labs, you are welcome to sign up for a slot to review your Marketing Materials. We will have three to four slots per call. You will still contact Natalie to sign up for a slot. To claim your spot, contact Natalie Sayer. Please put “Speakers Lab” in the subject line.

We will still have a facilitator and Guest Enricher. We will still meet from 9:30-11:45 a.m. And we still need observers to enrich the lab experience and feedback.

All chapter members are welcome to attend. If you don't normally attend lab because of the timing or travel, why don't you "drop in" and take advantage of this temporary change. If it works out, who knows how we might incorporate virtual into Speakers Lab?

Your chapter library is still open for business.

We've just held our first virtual meeting, which unfortunately meant that you didn't have the opportunity to browse the physical media. But that does not stop our quest for knowledge. Digital media is still available for download. Until we have the chance to meet again, we will handle the lending and return of physical media by mail.

  • If you have any items checked out, please contact me via email for mailing instructions to return them.
  • If you would like to borrow any items, please contact me at the same email address with your request. Let me know the type of media (CD, book, or magazine), the title, author/presenter, or any other info you have, and provide your mailing address.
  • Would you like some help or suggestions on a particular topic? Tell me what you're looking for, and I'll search my database for ideas. I'll let you know what I find, then mail you any item that you request.

Meanwhile, it looks like virtual or Internet-based meetings might be the norm, at least for the next several months. In fact, I just had a training session changed to a Zoom meeting. So I have found some titles that may be useful in conducting virtual training and meetings:

Do you ever confuse this word pair? Now you know the difference so you won't get tripped up!

Edition, issue—An “issue” is one of a series of something, such as a periodical or a particular month of a magazine. An “edition” is a series of printings of the same publication issued at a different time. It is often differentiated by alterations or additions not found in the original and may be limited in number (such as a “collector’s edition”). It can also refer to a specific format, such as electronic, or leather-bound, or illustrated. “The book’s second edition corrected the allegation that the June 1966 issue of Collier libeled the author.”

Question: How should I begin on a Facebook Live? Do I launch into the topic or begin by introducing myself?

Answer: Put on the user experience hat. What would you want to see if you were watching someone with something valuable to share? You would likely want there to be a level of trust and familiarity. Therefore, think of it as a mini TV show and develop a format. By the way, this works for Lives on Facebook, YouTube, and LinkedIn.

I do three to four Facebook Lives a week on my Drum Talk TV channel. Here’s my format for launching each episode:

“Hi, I’m Dan Shinder, Founder of Drum Talk TV! I am broadcasting from Globe Arizona. Tell me in the comments where you are watching from. Today we are going to talk about …” And away we go.

Other than a well-developed format, the most important element of a live broadcast is to involve your audience. Don’t make people feel like you are just waterboarding them with your information. Make it a two-way conversation. Be Inclusive. This is the number one way to build a relationship, brand love and trust with your target market.

Where do you live now? Where are you originally from? Do you share your home with pets or family?

I now reside in Glendale, Arizona. I’m originally from Rockford (born and raised) and Palatine (career move), Illinois.

I will always have a cat! I now have two calicos. I love cats because, no matter what, they are known to always land on their feet. That is how I see my life’s obstacles and journeys. I focus on always landing on my feet.

I share my home with my husband of five years, Larry.

Do you have any hobbies, travels, volunteer work, or other interesting things to share?

I am currently a volunteer at Fresh Start Women’s Foundation. However, I have done a lot of volunteer work over the years from the Red Cross, YWCA, YMCA (Rockford) to Cancer Center of America (Chicago) and Valley Hospice and the Gladys McClary Foundation (Phoenix).

My favorite time is dancing! I can’t take the smile off my face when I’m dancing. I also love outdoor activities like hiking, swimming, and horseback riding. My favorite exercise is walking, riding a bike, Zumba, and yoga.

My hobbies include sewing (dress making) and artsy projects like painting murals on my backyard cinder wall, anything where I get to express my creative side.

My furthest travels include Brazil and Germany.

What is your speaking specialty?

My speaking started with Image Consulting (1985) and then I added Business Etiquette and International Protocol (1991). More recently, I focus on topics that help others turn challenges into opportunities because I have been there and have grit to share!

What kind of work did you do before you started speaking? Are you still doing that or other work in addition to speaking?

Prior to my image consulting work that started in the early 1980s, I worked 16 years for a municipality and an international manufacturing company. During my image consulting time, I also worked as a personal shopper for Nordstrom.

I'm strictly a speaker/trainer/workshop leader.

When did you start speaking? When did you join NSA-Arizona?

I started my speaking business in 1985 and joined NSA in 1991. I was first a member of the Chicago chapter (1994 to 2007). I joined NSA-Arizona in 2008.

How have you volunteered for our chapter?

I served on the board as a Director for two years, co-chaired and chaired the candidate program, chaired the living room forum, and chaired the holiday Christmas Party.

For you, what is the best advantage of NSA-Arizona membership?

Camaraderie and the learning.
