President’s Message—One of the best presentations ever!
We kicked off the year with a great chapter meeting on January 13 with an attendance of over 60 members and guests. Scott Halford, CSP, CPAE shared great insights with us about how we, and our audiences and clients, think, perceive, disengage, and interact.
Our full morning agenda also included a fun interactive activity facilitated by Natalie Sayer. She had us break into groups by speaking topics and get to know each other better. We answered questions about our areas of expertise, clients we serve, and how NSA has supported our speaking business.
After Deb Exner spoke on one of our core 4 E’s, Eloquence, Kristin Arnold, CSP shared a valuable Nugget of Wisdom. Noelle Stanley briefed us on her experience with Chapter Leader Institute (CLI) as she prepares for her role as Chapter President this summer.
Kay Sever reminded all candidates to attend the next GAP Zoom meeting on February 7. Roger Rickard made an exciting announcement about an upcoming workshop, “Social Media on Steroids," taught by Dan Shinder. It will not only benefit members who attend, but 100% of all proceeds will remain with our chapter!
We had a full morning, of value, education, and fun – just what Speakers U is all about.

CANDIDATE PROGRAM—GAP: A Speaker's Journey to Success Launched
Mark Your Calendar for the next NSA-Arizona Candidate Session on February 7
NSA-Arizona kicked off GAP (Growth Acceleration Process) at the October 14 meeting. GAP is not about speech content or platform skill. It is all about Taking Action and Removing Barriers, something that every speaker could use!
GAP consists of FREE interactive Zoom Sessions dedicated to making faster progress and better execution as you build your speaking business.
- Zoom video sessions on the 1st Wednesday of February, March, April, May, June (6:50 p.m.–8:30 p.m.)
- GAP Agenda: “Ask the Experts” (30 minutes of sharing by an expert) followed by 60 minutes of Personal Challenges/Commitments & Group Interaction.
Future topics include: writing/editing books, overcoming obstacles, successfully marketing your speaking talents and reaching an expert level of success in your field.

Smile Sheets—the feedback forms we give learners after learning events

As speakers, many of us have spoken at events where the event organizers have distributed feedback forms. These have had instructions like, "Rate the speaker’s performance on a scale of 1 to 5." To improve as speakers, we need better feedback than that. NSA-Arizona provides an opportunity for you to have amazing support and feedback from skilled evaluators. They help you to improve the relevance of your message to your audience. We include feedback guidelines not just for the evaluators, but also for the speakers. This helps to provide supportive, constructive, and relevant advice.
Is there an area of your speaking or your speaking business that would benefit from some feedback? Come join us at Speakers’ Lab. Experience the valuable feedback and encouragement to help you improve in any area of the speaking business.
No RSVP is required to attend. We meet the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays from 9:30-11:45 A.M. at NSA headquarters. However, to speak at the Lab, you must be a chapter member in good standing.
We ask that you attend as a participant twice, before you sign up for time to speak. In a normal meeting, we have three 30-minute slots. Speakers can use the time to receive feedback and tips for a specific purpose, like trying out new material or trying a new form of speaking.

Do you ever confuse this word pair? Now you know the difference so you won't get tripped up!
Rationalize, justify – To “rationalize” is to ascribe actions to causes that seem reasonable but do not reflect the truth. To “justify” means to prove to be just, right, or reasonable. “I rationalize my desire to travel by finding a business reason to justify the cost.”

Reasons People Shy Away from Facebook
Many people who do not use Facebook for business have a variety of reasons for not doing so. These reasons are either not valid, or are easy for them to get around to make the experience useful. Believe me, I have heard it all, and here are three samples, as well has their solutions:
Reason: “I work with [client type] and those people are not on Facebook.”
Solution: Yes, they are. I guarantee in 85% of most cases, whoever your target market is, they are on Facebook.
Reason: “There’s too much drama and B.S. on Facebook.”
Solution: Just like in real life, this is only the case if you engage and make it part of your world. Scroll past it.
Reason: “I don’t know how to use it” or “I am not on it regularly.”
Solution: Embrace the value of a platform with 2 Billion monthly users. Learn how to use it effectively and put in the time.
Sixty-two percent of all consumers use FB, and I guarantee these consumers are your market. If you want to get better results, you have to do something more effective. The opportunity on Facebook is monumental. I am speaking from experience. I have been where you are with it, and now I have 1 million+ avid fans following my brand. It works, no matter how much you try and rationalize that it does not.
