The Voice of Professional Speakers in Arizona

May 2018 News Flash

Welcome to the May 2018 issue of the NSA-Arizona News Flash!

President’s Message—Another Full House

We had a great chapter meeting in April with another full house. The morning began with a speaker showcase featuring Becky Spohn, followed by a fun interactive activity facilitated by Pamela Jett, CSP.

For our main program, another chapter member, Debbie Allen, CSP, took us on a great journey about marketing, branding, and selling. She shared so much valuable information with us and then offered an afternoon session with a deep dive into selling.

Kristin Arnold, CSP, spoke on ethics, sharing a personal story full of great lessons. Damian Mason, CSP, shared a nugget of habits versus routines. It was a fantastic day in Speakers U with so many wonderful tools added to our speaker's toolbox.

Comments from the evaluations include:

  • The audience was really captivated.
  • We are continuing A+ trend, love the energy this year!
  • Inspiring. Enjoyed the day.

We have some great events coming up. Our Speakers Academy, “Speaking for Business,” is at SkySong on May 11. Look for details in this newsletter. Please let your friends know about this terrific event designed for professionals who speak in their roles but are not professional speakers.

At our June chapter meeting, we encourage you to wear your NSA pin with the number of years you’ve been a member. We want to collectively celebrate with you. Also, we'll have our “graduation” from this year’s Speaker’s U, install our new board, and announce the Member of the Year.

Influence is July 13-17 in Dallas, TX. Noelle Stanley, your President Elect, Doug Stevenson, CSP, and I are going and hope we have a great representation of Arizona! We are planning a special Arizona dinner for all AZ members who will be attending, so if you are going, please let me know!

Thank you to everyone who helped make our April meeting so successful. I look forward to seeing you at our May meeting on How to Build a Speaker Brand That Will Get You Hired with Bruce Turkel, CPAE. Great news–Bruce is also going to have an afternoon session to deeply dive into his topic! I look forward to seeing you at our May chapter meeting.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER—How to Build a Speaker Brand That Will Get You Hired with Bruce Turkel, CPAE

A Great Speech Will NOT Get You Hired.

Every NSA speech I've heard on branding includes a statement like, "A Great Speech is Your Best Brand."

In the advertising and marketing business there's a word for a statement like that. It's called nonsense. A great speech is not your best brand. A great speech is your product. A great speech gets you a standing ovation. But a great brand is what gets you hired in the first place.

If you want to learn what it really takes to build a brand and an enviable speaking business, you won't want to miss Bruce's presentation.

  • The power of CC 2 CC
  • Why your best brand is not about you
  • The three things you do that are keeping you from the success you want
  • How to build a powerful brand that is All About Them

The NOT-TO Be Missed Afternoon BONUS Session

In the afternoon, you will get your questions answered. You'll understand what a brand is and why it's essential. Also, you'll discover how you can build your brand to establish a clear and distinctive advantage in a competitive marketplace.

Bruce Turkel will go deeper into the ways in which you can extend and strengthen your brand with these tools:
A checklist for things to do on Monday morning to get started
Your speech
Interactive workshops
TV and radio
Social media
Bonus session: 1:30 to 4:00 p.m.
Add-on this registration when you check out.

Bruce has helped great brands including Bacardi, Discovery Channel, Humana, Miami, Puerto Rico, and more create their brand value. As a result, he developed a simple system to help companies, professionals, and individuals create their own powerful brands.

Bruce has always been suspicious of the term, "Those who can't do, teach." Consequently, he hones his skills by doing. He runs his brand management firm, writes books on branding, appears weekly on national TV, and speaks at corporate conferences around the world.

Also at this meeting:

  • 4 Es of Professional Speaking–Loretta Love Huff, MBA, CCP
  • Interaction activity with the question of the day–
  • Nugget of Wisdom–Barbara McNichol–Writing skills
  • Speaker Lab Showcase–Larry Young

SPEAKER LAB—Cultivate Your Speaking Skills

Reason to be at Speakers Lab #30

Phrase that pays—a short, memorable phrase that is the foundation of your message.

“Speak to be remembered and repeated.” –Patricia Fripp

We all recognize a “phrase that pays” when we hear it. Interestingly, we don’t always realize that we may already have these phrases hidden within our own presentations.

NSA-Arizona provides feedback from skilled evaluators who can help you discover, develop, and/or refine your own “phrases that pay." We include feedback guidelines not just for the evaluators but also for the speakers. This is just part of the supportive, constructive, and relevant advice that is provided through Speakers Lab.

Is there an area of your speaking or your speaking business that would benefit from some feedback? Come join us at Speakers’ Lab and experience the valuable feedback and encouragement to help you improve in any area of the speaking business.

No RSVP is required to attend. We meet the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays from 9:30-11:45 A.M. at NSA headquarters. However, to speak at the Lab, you must be a chapter member in good standing.

We ask that you attend as a participant twice, before you sign up for time to speak.

In a normal meeting, we have three 30-minute slots. Speakers can use the time to receive feedback and tips for a specific purpose. They can try out new material or a new form of speaking.

Oh boy, I've got a problem!

I was asked to write a textbook for the company where I contract as a trainer, and I gladly accepted. Now, I'm not so sure... there's a lot to do and a deadline looming. I need help!

So I turned to our beloved NSA library and found "Speed Writing," by Roger Grannis. He got the audience writing immediately by just spending three minutes typing or jotting down whatever came to mind. No editing, no outlining, no thinking– just writing! Writing kills self-doubt. Write a lousy first draft, fix it later. Don't judge yourself on your first draft.

If you want to participate, here's the next exercise. Think of something you want to expand from the first exercise. What jumped out at you in the three-minute free form drill? Sit down and make lists. Don't judge what's on the list. Get as many items on your lists as you can. We are still brainstorming, but on a specific topic. Take five minutes to create your lists, mind maps, or anything that helps you go deeper on a topic. Next, create an outline from your list, and then start that lousy first draft. Once you're in "the zone," keep going. As soon as you feel burned out or facing writer's block, take a break.

For the next exercise, write another draft 100 words at a time. Here's the trick: write each sentence so that it has a specific but randomly chosen number of words. If your random numbers are 3, 8, 12, and 7, write a 3-word, 8-word, 12-word, and 7-word sentence. This requires you to think differently and come up with new ideas. When class participants read aloud what they had written, the results were astonishing.

Thank goodness for this session, I have to finish this project by the end of May. I'll let you know how it goes.

Do you ever confuse this word pair? Now you know the difference so you won't get tripped up!

Number, amount – You’ve likely heard people say, “Consider the amount of amount of stores or the amount of muffins, etc.” In these phrases, the word “number” should be used instead of “amount.” Hint: If you can quantify or count the objects, use “number,” not “amount.” Therefore, the correct phrases are “Consider the number of stores, the number of muffins, etc.”

You Are a Content Factory!

But are your production lines open? When I teach, train and consult on effective social media marketing, I emphasize one point. To be seen as experts, we need to constantly be publishing content.

This is daunting to many people. Often, at the thought of this, they have no idea where all this content is going to come from. However, many of these same people have written books and articles, and have plenty of convincers in place on their website.

Your wealth of experience and expertise is your inventory for the content your target market is craving. You need this equation to pan out in order for them to like, trust and love what you do as a brand. Those three elements need to be in place for them to sign up for a newsletter, hire you for services, or speak at an event. Content also allows you to stay present, relevant, helpful to others, inclusive and to been seen as an expert in your field. All of which are the best alternative to, “Out of sight, out of mind.”

The brilliance of content—your content—is that there are so many ways to repurpose it. Imagine taking blog articles you write for your following (you do this, right?) and breaking them into smaller nuggets.

And then imagine posting those nuggets on LinkedIn, Facebook, and even smaller bits on Twitter to pique their interest. All of these drive traffic to your full length article. This then should drive them down your funnel to [insert whatever would be equitable for both you and your client prospect here!].

Dan Shinder teaches social media marketing to entrepreneurs and corporations and is NSA-Arizona's own social media marketer. Visit his website Social Media on Steroids.
