President’s Message—Thank you for exhibiting the Spirit of Cavett

This nation celebrated the first anniversary of the end of World War I, 100 years ago, on the 11th of November 1919. We continue to honor this date with the holiday Veterans Day. This year, the Veterans Day National Committee’s annual poster was designed around the theme of Service. The next time you feel inclined to thank Veterans for their service, stop for a minute. Instead, ask them about their time of service, how it went, what it entailed, and their feelings today. Appreciation expressed from a deeper connection will be felt differently, by them and you. Our Veterans deserve nothing less.

On November 14th, insiders in the world of speaking (you and me), celebrate a man whose trademark was a life of service. He is the spirit of inspiration to those brave men and women who devote themselves to teach, train, motivate, and elevate the lives of others. On behalf of our chapter, our industry, and audiences around the world, thank YOU for exhibiting the Spirit of Cavett in all the gritty details of our profession.

Let’s keep working those details together. The fast and fascinating rise of an unknown to a highly productive speaker will be unveiled at this month's chapter meeting. Watch for an email soon about our new Expert Insights webinars. And, of course, the LAB experience has no substitute. (LRF will see you in the new year!) Look forward to seeing you soon, but, just in case, Happy Thanksgiving!

Frank Molinar
NSA-Arizona President

KEYNOTE SPEAKER—Growing Your Speaker Business with a Social Media CREATOR First Mindset with Brian Fanzo

No email list, no book, no niche and only a team of two required Brian Fanzo to go about growing his speaker business differently. He not only stands out, but builds trust, relationships and cuts through the noise. In a short five years, Brian went from speaking being 20% of his revenue to 90% of it. This has led to 50+ paid speaking gigs in 2019.

Brian Fanzo will share his content creator strategy that includes video creation, hosting podcasts, posting daily on social media and event amplification such as:

  • Recording weekly LinkedIn Videos
  • Creating podcast titles as if they were keynote topics
  • Documenting vs. creating video content
  • Defining unique success metrics for each social network
  • Targeting future events through Twitter engagement and amplification of other speakers
  • Finding the tools, gear and tactics to create while you are on the go and not have to do extra work, and “up-cycling” existing work as a creator.

A keynote speaker, Brian Fanzo inspires, motivates, and educates businesses on how to leverage emerging technologies and digital marketing. He helps them to stand out from the noise and engage with customers of all ages. He has a diverse background working for the Department of Defense in cybersecurity, then as a technology evangelist at a booming cloud computing startup. Currently, he is the Founder of iSocialFanz. This has helped launch digital and influencer strategies with the world’s most iconic brands like Dell, EMC, Adobe, IBM, UFC, Applebees, and SAP. Brian’s #ThinkLikeAFan philosophy has powered first-of-their-kind storytelling campaigns for many Fortune 50 enterprise companies leveraging Periscope, SnapChat and Facebook Live. Brian has delivered keynotes in 11 countries highlighting his passion for change, collaboration, and community.

Volunteering gives you the chance to get to know your fellow NSA-Arizona members, and allows them to know you. Our volunteers help our chapter to put together and bring you wonderful programs that further your speaking career. There are many opportunities to join in and sustain our growth, and we invite you to participate.

We are excited to introduce a new campaign we are running on the official NSA-Arizona Facebook page: “Arizona Speaks!” Our marketing Committee chair and BOD member Dan Shinder will be conducting interviews live on the NSA-Arizona Facebook page, which will be done online via Zoom. You can do this from the comfort of your own home or office. The purpose of these short interviews is to A) learn from the collective wealth of experience our chapter has in the speaking business, and B) to inspire new membership. These interviews are not self-promotion, but are the sharing of your wisdom through accomplishments in the speaking business. If you are an NSA-Arizona chapter member and would like to book time with Dan for an interview, please email Dan with the subject “Book me for NSA-Arizona Speaks!” and he will respond with date/time slots available.

SPEAKERS LAB—Cultivate Your Speaking Skills—Reason to Be at Speakers Lab #41—Introductions

“An introduction is designed to answer three questions: why this topic, why this audience, why this speaker.” —Unknown

An introduction sets the stage for the speech and for the speaker. An introduction can brag about the speaker in ways the speaker cannot. At NSA-Arizona Speakers Lab, we ask each speaker to provide an introduction and to let us know who the target audience is for the speech.

NSA-Arizona Speakers Lab is known for providing valuable feedback from skilled evaluators. Along with feedback about the speech itself, we provide feedback on the quality and appropriateness of the introduction. We do this in a structured environment that includes guidelines both for evaluators and for speakers. This helps to provide supportive, constructive, and useful advice.

Is there an area of your speaking or your speaking business that would benefit from some feedback? Come join us at Speakers Lab and experience the valuable feedback and encouragement to help you improve in any area of the speaking business.

No RSVP is required to attend. We meet the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays from 9:30-11:45 a.m. at NSA headquarters. However, to speak at the Lab, you must be a chapter member in good standing. We ask that you attend as a participant twice, before you sign up for time to speak.

In a normal meeting, we have three 30-minute slots. Speakers can use the time to receive feedback and tips for a specific purpose, like trying out new material or trying a new form of speaking.

To claim your spot, contact Natalie Sayer. Please put “Speakers Lab” in the subject line.

Upcoming Guest Enrichers 11/12—Dr. Tyrone Holmes
11/26—No Lab scheduled on this date
12/10—Roger Rickard

At our last meeting, our own Randy Goruk asked if our library had any material on building a mastermind group. So, I opened up my trusty iPad and did a keyword search for "mastermind." I found the following:

  • 2008: Masterminds Rock Businesses: 7 Keys to Make Them Effective and Enduring by Kathy Loveless (CD)
  • 2013: Facilitated Mastermind: Where Everyone is a Learner and Everyone is an Expert by Eliz Greene (mp3)
  • 2016: Make Money with Masterminds by Sheryl Bindelglass (mp3)
  • 2018: Creating an Online Mastermind Group by Marquesa Pettway (mp3)
  • 2018: How to Build a Successful Mastermind Group Speed-dating Edition by Eliz Greene, Gerry O'Brion, Wally Adamchik, Thom Singer, and Jess Pettitt (mp3)

As you can see, there is a treasure trove of knowledge and info on the topics you want to learn. Hit me up and I'll find something for you.

Richard is NSA-Arizona’s librarian who accepts donations of books, tapes, magazines, CDs, and videos of interest to speakers. Contact Richard for instructions to download recent NSA Convention sessions.

Do you ever confuse this word pair? Now you know the difference so you won't get tripped up!

Extend, expand—“Extend” means to stretch or lengthen, or to draw out up to full length; also to present or offer, as in a greeting or contribution. “Expand” means to spread out, develop, or otherwise enlarge in size or scope, etc. “If your waist expands, you have to extend your belt length.”

By Dan Shinder

Question: How often should I post on my Facebook Fan/Biz page (and why)?

Answer: My answer often angers people, as I am an expert at giving people more to do. However, everything I teach works, guaranteed. You should post on your Facebook Fan Page a minimum of three times a day, seven days a week.

Don't use the excuse, "I don't have time." You can schedule your posts in advance. You never have to be stuck posting in real time. If you complain, "I don't know what to post," then you don't know how to use social media marketing effectively. Community-building content should be 70-80%, not just advertising your business. Post about the common interest between your brand and your target markets.

Why three times a day?

  1. Facebook shows your content to more people with this minimum frequency.
  2. Everyone's online at different times, and there is no way anyone will ever see all your posts unless they comb through your page. You can thank Facebook for that.

And no, you will NOT wear out your followers, thanks again to Facebook. Don't let marketing, especially social media marketing, be that thing off to the side you neglect. Learn how, do it exceptionally well, and reap the rewards.

Dan Shinder teaches social media marketing to entrepreneurs and corporations and is NSA-Arizona's own social media marketer. Visit his website Social Media on Steroids.
