Welcome to the October 2017 issue of the NSA-Arizona News Flash!
Wow, what a great way to kick off the 2017/2018 chapter year, AKA Speakers U! We had an epic meeting on September 9, where we unveiled our new program agenda. The meeting was filled with interaction, inspiration, and insight. We kicked off with an introduction of your board of directors:
- Noelle Stanley, President Elect and Living Room Forum Chair
- Dr. Larry Emmott, Past President and Membership Chair
- Frank Molinar, Vice President and Sponsorship Chair
- Natalie Sayer, Treasurer and Speakers Lab Chair
- Kay Sever, Candidates Program Chair
- Roger Rickard, Fundraising Chair
- Doug Stevenson, CSP, Programs Chair
- Lisa Maurer, Speakers Bootcamp Chair
- Naomi Rhode, Chapter Sage
In addition to the board of directors, Becky Spohn is Special Events Chair and Dan Shinder is Marketing Chair. If you would like to support any of the above efforts, please contact the chairperson directly.
Lisa Maurer facilitated a great activity for goal setting and getting to know each other better. Tanner Gers was our showcase speaker who gave a preview of his TEDx talk that he had been practicing in Speakers Lab. And then, Jim Cathcart, CSP, CPAE, hit the stage, capturing all of us with his sincerity, wisdom, and skill.
Naomi Rhode, CSP, CPAE, CSPGlobal, finished up our meeting by sharing nuggets of gold she acquired during her highly successful speaking career.
Comments from the evaluations include:
- “The new format was awesome! Lisa and Tanner set the stage and bar very high! The energy in the room was great – like when I first joined. Looking forward to October.”
- “I’ve had a value-packed day! I had fun! I’m even more prepared to begin my professional speaking journey!”
- “Loved all the new ideas and changes. Fresh look on things. Great job!”
- “It’s going to be a great year!”
Thank you to all of the members who served to make the meeting such a huge success! I can’t wait to see you at the October meeting, where we will have Marquesa Pettway, CSP speaking on The Profitable Lifestyle Speakerpreneur Business.

Is there an area of your speaking or speaking business that would benefit from some refinement?
NSA-Arizona provides an amazing opportunity for you to have amazing support and feedback so that you can, through refinement, become the best speaker possible. Come join us at Speakers’ Lab and experience the valuable feedback and encouragement for you to improve in any area of the speaking business.
No RSVP is required to attend. We meet the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays from 9:30-11:45 A.M. at NSA headquarters. However, to speak at the Lab, you must be a chapter member in good standing.
We ask that you attend as a participant twice, before you sign up for time to speak.
In a normal meeting, we have three 30-minute slots. Speakers can use the time to receive feedback and tips for a specific purpose, like trying out new material or trying a new form of speaking.

WORD TRIPPER FROM THE PLATFORM
By Barbara McNichol
Do you ever confuse this word pair? Now you know the difference so you won’t get tripped up!
Disinterested, uninterested – “Disinterested” means to be impartial and unbiased. “Uninterested” means not interested, bored, indifferent. “She was disinterested in the outcome of the dispute and therefore made a great mediator. Her partner, however, was completely uninterested in the case and walked away from it.”
