Welcome to the September 2018 issue of the NSA-Arizona News Flash!
President’s Message—Ready to shift your speaking business to the next level?
Welcome back to an amazing 2018-2019 year with NSA-Arizona. Are you ready to shift your speaking business to the next level? Are you ready to learn new insights and techniques that few people know? Well, have we got a year in store for you. Your board, and especially your Program Chair Stephanie Angelo, have been working hard to create a dynamic lineup for our monthly presentations. Some of our year’s highlights are listed below:
- Let Frances Rio guide you in reshaping your speaking model.
- Learn how to master negotiation for more profit and ease with Black Belt Negotiating from Michael Soon Lee.
- See how to create a more powerful and impactful presentation with coaching from Mark Brown. These are just a few of our speakers we have lined up for next year.
I want to share some of my highlights from Influence 2018. The energy, fellowship and education and entertainment were off the charts. The Arizona chapter was able to bond and spend time together. For any of you foodies, many of us met up for a delicious Italian dinner in Dallas.
One of the group’s favorite lines from one of the presenters was, “Wouldn’t it make sense to…” You might use this when you’re negotiating an upsell for your talk. For instance, “Wouldn’t it make sense to add on 1000 books for a discounted price for your team, so they can utilize this information throughout the year?” It’s a simple and easy line to use when negotiating.
Our creative and talented program chair was present and scouting out topics and presenters that would best meet our chapter’s needs. You are in for a year of new ideas and profit-driven subject matter. I hope to see as many of you as possible this September as we kick off the year, make new friends and learn together. Let’s continue to change the world one speech at a time.
See you on September 8th.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER—Reshaping the Model with Frances Rios
The female consumer is in the driver’s seat. Women are in charge of 85% of the household purchasing decisions, and that translates into the speaking world, as well. Companies of all sizes and industries are investing thousands and millions of dollars to develop their female talent. This is in order to have more women sitting at the top tiers and on boards of directors.
To grow your speaking business, you need to understand the needs and wants of the female audience when it comes to selling and speaking to them.
Through Reshaping the Model you will get proprietary information that Frances only shares with her Fortune company clients.
Adding the color pink to your presentations or proposals doesn’t translate into connecting better with female clients. If you want to connect better with the female decision-makers and audience, you have to incorporate women among your offerings.
How can you do this?
- Choose stories that resonate better with women
- Integrate images that attract their attention.
- Incorporate tactics that go along with the female talent needs.
- Communicate in a manner that doesn’t feel pushy to women.
- And much more!
Don’t leave money on the table. Come and learn eye opening tactics that members of the Florida Speakers Association are raving about!
Come and discover what women need and want from data gathered through the W Certified Company™. This is a unique and proprietary diagnostic tool that helps organizations understand what their female talent needs in order to move to the top tiers of organizations. Fortune companies like Walmart, Johnson & Johnson, Medtronic, and Microsoft take advantage of this tool to be publicly recognized as preferred by women who lead.
Frances Rios is recognized as a thought provoking speaker and pioneer of women inclusion in Latin America. Her focus is to promote economic growth through the Power of Women©. Her impact has been so profound that she was appointed to the Women’s Council by the Governor of Puerto Rico. The council helps advance the causes of Puerto Rican women.
Female and male leaders have benefited from her unique programs. These include these programs: The Women Who Lead Summit™--the largest of its kind in Latin America, the W Certified Company™, and her new Women Who Lead Academy™.

LIVING ROOM FORUM: You are the Differentiator: How to Promote Yourself Most Effectively
Date: Wednesday, September 26, 2018
Time: 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Topic: You are the Differentiator: How to Promote Yourself Most Effectively
Facilitator: Connie Kadansky
Venue: Lynne Wellish’s house
Connie Kadansky will facilitate a discussion on the Key Performance Indicators for speakers/trainers and facilitators. The discussion will also cover how to overcome Call Reluctance, which is the emotional hesitation to prospect and self-promote. It is much more than the cold call. Call Reluctance affects your follow through, asking for referrals, requesting LinkedIn recommendations, and asking for the business. It also impacts your ability to stick to your pricing, directly prospect upscale centers-of-influence, and create relationships with strategic alliance partners.
Many speakers hide behind being “busy, busy, busy,” and they are not developing new clients on a consistent basis.
In this talk, you will:
- Explore how you can personally differentiate yourself in the marketplace.
- Identify the types of Call Reluctance that stop you from promoting effectively.
- Discover your Key Performance Indicators that put you front and center with prospects.
Connie Kadansky works with sales organizations where the activity management of the sales force is the highest priority. Prospering organizations want to make sure their salespeople are engaged in the right activities, e.g., getting in front of customers and selling their products. When salespeople are not focused on their daily key performance indicators, there are many different reasons. One reason, which is often ignored and devilishly costly, is Sales Call Reluctance, the emotional hesitation to prospect and self-promote.
Connie Kadansky is a Professional Certified Coach (PCC) speaker and trainer. She offers speaking, training, coaching and performance improvement services specifically addressing Sales Call Reluctance. She has a proven track record with diverse businesses, from entrepreneurs to Fortune 50 companies both nationally and internationally.
Cost: $15 members $25 guests

SPEAKER LAB—Cultivate Your Speaking Skills
NSA-Arizona provides feedback from skilled evaluators who can help you discover, develop, and/or refine your own “phrases that pay.” We include feedback guidelines, not just for the evaluators but also for the speakers. This is just part of the supportive, constructive, and relevant advice that is provided through Speakers Lab.
Is there an area of your speaking or your speaking business that would benefit from some feedback? Come join us at Speakers’ Lab and experience the valuable feedback and encouragement to help you improve in any area of the speaking business.
We ask that you attend as a participant twice, before you sign up for time to speak.
In a normal meeting, we have three 30-minute slots. Speakers can use the time to receive feedback and tips for a specific purpose. They can try out new material or a new form of speaking.
To claim your spot, contact Natalie Sayer. Please put “Speakers Lab” in the subject line.

By Richard Victor, Chapter Librarian
You’ve heard the saying, “Eighty percent of life is showing up,” right? Well, I am here to tell you that this is true! Because, at our final meeting last season, Doug Stevens, our dean of studies at Speaker University, asked, “Who showed up this year at every chapter meeting and the holiday and summer parties?” My hand went up. And since I raised my hand, I was invited to come up and grab a box full of goodies. My prize package included:
- “Solid Gold Nuggets of Speaking and Storytelling Wisdom” CD set hosted by Doug Stevenson
- “Money Talks: How to Make a Million as a Speaker” by Alan Weiss
- “How to Deliver a Dynamite Speech: Featuring the 21-step Dynamite Speech System” by Doug Stevenson
And all I had to do was show up. Mine was only one of a (shockingly) few hands that indicated they had attended every meeting that season. So get on

WORD TRIPPER FROM THE PLATFORM
By Barbara McNichol
Do you ever confuse this word pair? Now you know the difference so you won’t get tripped up!
Weary, wary—“Weary” means to be physically or mentally tired due to hard work, exertion, strain; it also means to be impatient or dissatisfied with something (e.g., weary of excuses). “Wary” is being watchful or on guard against danger. “Even if you become weary while driving, being wary of the traffic around you is your first priority.”
SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING—The Best Times to Market and Promote
By Dan Shinder, Marketing Committee Chair
You should always be marketing and promoting in one way or another, but not always be “salesy.” Much of your marketing should be “community-building content,” with 80% of your topics about the common interest between you and your target market.
The most common excuse for not marketing or promoting on a regular basis is, “I don’t have time.” Whether you blog, use social media platforms or send carrier pigeons, the first step to getting it done is to develop a habit of frequency.
When I started my online media company Drum Talk TV, I spent 70% of my waking hours marketing and promoting. I got to one million followers in just under five years without spending a penny on ads or boosting posts. I was freakishly busy, and I made it work. We all can. It’s a conscious decision and good practices in time management and discipline.
So don’t let “time,” or yourself, stand in your way. What better thing to write or make quick videos about than what you love? Pour yourself into it. Your target market will feel the passion and they’ll know you are sincere and genuine!
