Welcome to the September 2019 issue of the NSA-Arizona News Flash!
President’s Message—Deeper Connections, Deeper Collaborations
Imagine catching a glimpse of the future and stumbling on a secret known only by the few travelers who’ve been there. That secret being the single biggest benefit extracted from a lifetime of the NSA experience…
I stopped counting after half a dozen industry icons spontaneously revealed the same secret. Honestly, how many times does such an eclectic mix of backgrounds, experts, and Type A personalities agree with such uniformity? It wasn’t the money, the network, the accolades or titles they called out. It was the friendships. Friendships that helped them navigate the plethora of paths in the business of speaking amidst the inevitable ups and downs of life’s journey.
When there’s no debate, the only thing left is to embrace, facilitate, and pursue the same experience. And, so was born our theme for the year, the pursuit of: Deeper Connections, Deeper Collaborations.
As we dive into our chapter activities, know that this theme is the intentional undercurrent in all our efforts. We'll unveil new initiatives, like the Stories of Us, Deeper Dives w/Chapter Experts, and others still in development. And yet, all the fun and exciting things we do will never be enough…without you.
Instead of pondering, What am I getting out of NSA-Arizona? Will you embrace the call and ask, How can I dig deeper into this community of professional communicators? The deeper our roots, the higher our reach. What we can accomplish together and separately the world has yet to see–let’s show them!
A shout out to Brandie Beane for knocking it out of the park with our Summer Social!
Our first monthly chapter meeting welcomes Dr. Marcia Reynolds revealing the benefits of being an emotionally intelligent speaker and Dr. Jaime Hope bringing her seasoned insights on adversity, human behavior and motivating change. Can’t wait to see you then!

LIVING ROOM FORUM: Getting a Media Interview and Making It Count
Your message needs a bigger audience! It would make for a perfect interview on local news or in the paper. But how do you get there? What’s the secret to a perfect story pitch? How do you break through the newsroom force field? And once you get that opportunity, how do you make the most of it? Some people will hire PR agencies to get their foot in the door. That’s great if you can afford it, but it’s still possible to pull off that first interview without any help. Like everything else in life, it just takes insight and persistence.
Rick DeBruhl has worked in the TV industry for four decades. He’s interviewed presidents and rock stars. More importantly, he’s interviewed and coached literally thousands of everyday people through their first media adventure. Rick will give advice about how you can make your pitch, as well as how to nail the interview.
You'll learn these four key takeaways:
- Here's the secret to the perfect story pitch.
- Who should you pitch?
- Why should they interview you?
- What happens if you get brain freeze during the interview?
Rick DeBruhl is an Emmy Award winning network broadcaster, working as a news reporter and anchor for more than three decades. In addition, he has also worked for ABC, ESPN, NBC, Fox Sports and other networks covering auto racing. He is currently the voice of the Barrett Jackson auctions on the Motor Trend Network and a communication consultant based in Phoenix.

By Richard Victor
My library management tool
If you ever come to check out the items in our chapter's lending library, you probably see me tapping on my iPad. That's because I realized that I need an efficient and effective way to keep track of titles and find what someone is looking for.
In the past, people would ask, "Do you have anything about speaking in other countries?"
I'd say, "Yeah, let me find it." After 10 minutes of thumbing through index cards, I'd find out that it was already checked out. I needed a database, and I was sure there's an app for that.
After trying a couple of trial versions, I selected an app called "Book Crawler." The full version is just $2, and though it took a long time (there are over 400 titles in the library), I have a complete cross-referenced managed database. I can quickly and easily sort and search to help you find exactly what you're looking for.
Here are some of the sort and filter tools that I use to manage the library:
- Collection–first I group by national convention by year from 2007 to 2017, Speaker Magazine, Voice of Experience, and Books.
- Format–most of the items are on CD, but we also have magazines, books, cassettes, and MP3s.
- Tags–I also group by topic. Looking for something on marketing, performance, professional development, sales, business operations, or humor? No problem.
- Author–it's really "presenter" of course, but if you want to hear something by Chris Clark-Epstein, Scott Ginsburg, Nido Quebein, Thom Winninger, or Patricia Fripp? Sure thing.
- Own–I'm afraid not all items from our collection are still in our possession. But the app places a check mark next to any item that is still available to lend.
Not sure what you're looking for, but hoping to find something interesting? Stop by the break room and run through the CD collection. Or just pick up my iPad and shuffle through the titles, or pick a title or a topic and see what you can find. Then let me know if you found it worthwhile.
Richard is NSA-Arizona’s librarian who accepts donations of books, tapes, magazines, CDs, and videos of interest to speakers. Contact Richard for instructions to download recent NSA Convention sessions.
WORD TRIPPER FROM THE PLATFORM
By Barbara McNichol
Do you ever confuse this word pair? Now you know the difference so you won't get tripped up!
Number, amount – You’ve likely heard people say, “Consider the amount of dollars it takes...” or “the amount of stores we have is less than our competitors’ stores.” In both phrases, the word “number” should be used instead of “amount” and “fewer” should be used instead of “less.”
Here’s the rule: If you can quantify the noun (that means count the objects), use “number” or “fewer.” So, the correct phrases are “Consider the number of dollars it takes ...” and “the number of stores we have is fewer than our competitors’ stores.”
SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING
By Dan Shinder
Question: Why should I record Facebook Live videos?
Answer: This is a great question, and the answer is even better. Facebook Live is the number one thing you can do on social media to build a relationship with your audience, your target market, and your prospects. These are who are, or will become, your consumers. Whether it’s your company, a company you work for or your own personal brand, it works.
Here are some tips:
- Be yourself, stay genuine.
- Schedule them in advance with a topic in mind and be prepared.
- Be inclusive. Take questions live and interact with viewers. Inform and learn at the same time.
- Have fun and do it at least once a week!
